Focus MK4 1.0 ecoboost vibrates at 2200-2500 rpm

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've noticed this in my 1 month old focus, as did several owners in Portugal.

With the focus 1.0 125hp ecoboost in normal drive mode (or eco), if you go on cruising speed on 6th gear (manual gearbox) between 2200 and 2500 rpm, there is a vibration. This is anoying as thats the revs for a cruising speed of around 65-70 mph, so close to highway limit here.

It also happens on lower gears in the same rpm range, although less noticable.

Can you please test yours, if the 1.0 with manual gearbox? Just drive at that rpm range in 6th gear and press the gas pedal very slightly just to keep the speed.

Regards

hey, I’m experiencing the exact same problem. Hopefully someone can give us an answer.

Cheers,

Gergo

I have the 1.0 125 ecoboost Mk4 2020 Reg, I have exactly the same issue at motorway speeds, though don't notice at lower speeds.

If I put it in sports mode the vibration disappears its been like this since brand new but since I hardly ever have it on the motorway I've not taken into the garage yet, probably wait until its first service.

Looks like this could be affecting a number of cars, very poor by Ford. Anyone else have this?

This is completely normal.

These vibrations are caused by cilinder deactivation. This is just a characteristic of the latest 1.0 ECOboost engine and not a problem.

When Sport Mode is selected the cilinder deactivation is disabled so that is exactly the reason why the vibrations are not present when Sport Mode is selected.

JW1982 thanks for your reply, my old car a Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost 125 2014 reg never had this characteristic and seemed to be more quiet too.

Seems a step back for Ford with regard to the ecoboost engine its not comfortable driving on the motorway but then again I just put it in sports mode so no big deal. My fault really should of taken it on a motorway test drive before I bought it. Worth thinking about if you are going to buy one.

Yes, your Fiesta would have had the previous wet belt engine which didn't have the deactivation feature. I've only briefly driven the later chain cam version but I also felt it didn't seem as smooth and quiet as the previous version in my Fiesta.

The deactivation feature seems to be a bit self-defeating if people end up driving in sport mode to avoid it as they find it unpleasant! Just another of those features to shave off the odd gram of CO2 under test conditions, I guess.

I have driven a few VW group cars which deactivate 2 out of 4 cylinders in a similar way, and can't say I noticed the system operating at all, presumably because the 4 cylinder is inherently better balanced?

I have a manual Focus Titanium 1.0 125ps built in January of this year (bought in June/July) with about 5.5k miles on the clock.  Love it ... a delightfully quiet and smooth car to drive, only emitting a pleasing, almost sporty sound when one pushes it.  It is not the mild hybrid version but does, I believe, have cylinder deactivation (which my dealer told me I would never notice).

To date I have not experienced any vibration at any speed so, having read this thread, I was interested to see if at the specific revs/gears given above I could induce the car to vibrate. At 2,375 revs (or thereabouts) in 6th my car did 68mph (a speed, I have to say, I rarely travel at unless constrained by traffic). Set on speed control for 5 miles I can confirm I noticed no vibration whatsoever, just the usual v slight wind noise from the wing mirror. Returning I controlled the speed with my right foot and periodically let the rev counter move between 2,250 and 2,500 revs (in the latter case the car was doing 71mph on the speedo). Again, no vibration whatsoever.

I did notice on the tripometer my mpg figure improved considerably over the journey, but I have no evidence at all that cylinder deactivation was actually working.

I'd have a word with your dealer if I was you ... a modern car like this should not vibrate (memories of my dear father's Vauxhall Victor in the days before people like me/us had heard of wheel balancing).

Thanks Eric Bloodaxe and Linds for your feedback. 👍  Same issue in this thread if anyone is interested:-

Seem's luck of the draw, I'm just going to live with it as I'm barely on the motorway.

I have new Focus Active x. It vibrates around 1500-1600 rpm under acceleration. Vibrations disappear for higher or lower rpm range. What does it mean?

That sounds like a similar rev range to a couple of the quotes I just posted in this thread:

I have the same problem with 1.5 tdci ecoblue. Only on cold engine, 1800-2200rpm, any gear. Nothing on standstill, nothing out of gear. Anyone found the problem and fixed the issue?
