Rattle/Clunk/Rattle on back left nearside noise ?

Featured Replies

Got a 10 plate Fiesta and has always been reliable from new except for the several things like breaking shock springs, but other that that it's been a great car.

An irritating noise has started on the car, this has been going on for about 3 months now, on smooth roads there's no rattle/clunk, but on rough bumpy roads we hear the noise, it doesn't do it constantly and i'm getting fed up with hearing it, it's only on the back rear where the noise comes from, i've checked the spare wheel & jack to see if they was lose, nice & tight, thought the rattle/clunking noise might be coming from the rear seat anchor points but nope, there's no noise from the locking mech', also removed the black plastic rear valance to look at the plastic mounting pins, one was lose, so removed it and screwed it up solid, thought it was that but alas it wasn't, getting really pee'd off with this noise now.

Had the missus in the back of the car whilst I drove, in an aid to pinpoint the exact place, but can't.

I know it's none of the front shock springs & rear shock springs & bushes as these was all replaced and as good as new.

Even thinking of driving with the boot lid up to see if it's the boot when it's closed.

Could it be the damper on the suspension arm ?

Car has only done 49,000 miles.

Check the heat shield above the exhaust.

The fixing bolts tend to rust away and it drops onto the exhaust giving a nasty metallic rattle. Sometimes it isn't quite dropped but can rattle anyway.

I had the heat shield fall onto the backbox last year, what a noise that made and refixed it back up but I'll check it again just incase.

Mine was a rear spring, so I replaced them both. Just take a peek under there and see.  I was also able to hear it by just pushing up and down on the rear of the car. I looked under there and I could see the right rear spring had rusted through and broke hehe.

Both springs & upper anti-squeak bushes was changed only a year ago, so not the springs.

Still got this flamin annoying knock/clunk and the heat shield is still up tight, the noise isn't apparent until the car goes over bumpy bits of road or going over a speed hump, driving on a smooth road, everything is fine.

Removed both rear wheels today and couldn't see any tell-tale signs of bushes worn - springs still good - anti-squeak bushes good..... I'm wondering if it is the rear shock absorber and the top mount is at fault ?
