New power steering pump leaks and whines…

Featured Replies

Hoping someone can give me some pointers on where to look! My car currrently sorn, need to get a few bits fixed.

focus mk2 1.6 ti vct needed a new power steering pump, I got all the parts, and a friend fitted them for me. All parts either ford, or branded.

it has had a fluid steering leak since. It started out emptying the bottle (to min level) in a couple of miles journey, now it just dumps it all out in a minute or so when the car is ticking over (again to min level.)

The leak appears to be coming from the vicinity of the union bolt. The pipe that goes into the union bolt looks like it is fully in, but it’s quite difficult to see exactly where the leak is coming from, either outside the bolt, or from the pipe.

The pump has also started making an awful whining and vibrating noise. Aware this could be due to failing pump, system needs bleeding, needs more fluid, or the alternator bolts might not be torqued up to quite right.

any help much appreciated.

Did you replace the pipe and union? They are single use, won't seal properly a second time.
