3dr mk6 thinks it’s a 5dr (door open alarm)

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

New here and to mk6 ST ownership. Enjoying the car but the door alarm on the dash is bugging the hell out of me!

It says the rear driver and passenger doors are open - I’ve read lots about the door catches being faulty but this always seems to be on cars with the correct number of doors vs the alarm (ie replace the catch on drivers door if the car thinks that door is open) but that’s obviously not the case here! Interior light will stay on all the time if in the ‘light when doors are open’ position. No problem locking the car as yet. Mileage part of the dash stays lit all the time, even when locked but I don’t know if they all do that?

Is this a common problem that I can easily solve?

Thanks in advance,

lee

So has this done it from the day you bought it or more recently?

Take the door panels off the rear and try and find out which one is keeping the light on, im going to guess its an actuator or bad earth...If you find which one it is by pass it the other three will still work...or buy a new actuator to replace faulty one if its that....

Door ajar light should still works on other 3 doors.

It doesn't have rear doors, that's the problem, lol.

@LeeBee Perhaps an electrical component has been changed and is programmed for a 5 door, or someone has messed around with Forscan or similar and changed something they shouldn't.

Sounds like the gem module has been fitted from a 5 Dr without being reconfigured.

Yes I’d agree with iantt and this would be my first port of call, slightly awkward to get to and remove, but once you work out how to unplug all the block connectors it’s pretty straightforward.
To ensure you get the correct gem for your car you need to match up the first 4digits of the part number and being an ST you are need to ensure second last digit of part number is a ‘D’ which will be equipped with remote central locking. You also need to make sure if your car is a facelift mk6.5 then you need to get a GEM that was originally fitted to a facelift model. And of course it must be from a 3door too. If the ad doesn’t state this and if the seller doesn’t know then avoid buying.942980163520fdaac2b4bf1639a73003.jpg

What a hive of information!

The car is a 6.5 and new to me recently, purchased as a work hack so I wasn’t too fussed when the guy pointed out the problem. He did tell me “it’s a common ST fault” & I had no reason to doubt him - after hours on google I’m starting to change my mind about the common statement!

Can I see the numbers on the gem unit without stripping it from the car? Would be nice to see if it’s the problem if there’s a specific layout to the numbers.

While I’m here I saw something about Haynes manuals - do I just need the regular one for the car and then a focus one for the engine or something?

Thanks,

lee

Yes you can see the part number without having to remove it, best idea is to use your phone camera to take a photo of it (that’ll save you from having to stick your head down inside the footwell the part number should be 6S6T-15K600 - and then CorD followed by another letter

Hmm, thought you guys had found the solution but doesn’t look like it. Sticker on the unit is 6S6T-15K600-CL 🤔

Any other thoughts as to what it might be?

Thanks,

Should of read properly sorry. But yes wrong module may be in play a 5 door instead of a 3...

CL will be equipped for remote central locking but not equipped for alarm, so might actually be ok for your needs?

Most gems are configured for either 3 or 5 door. Probably just need a reconfigure. I found this out when I had to swap a gem module on a focus 2007 some years ago. The bonnet open came on dash when there wasn't a bonnet switch . I just reconfigured with as-built data .

Reconfiguring is well and good if you have the capabilities, probably just as cheap buying a used one to save all the hassle and trying to get ford to do it for you.

Does this mean it doesn’t have an alarm on it with that gem module?

How do you do that? Is that using FORScan? I’ve seen mention of it - seems like it might be worthwhile having but any recommendations as to the best unit to buy? Everyone on eBay says theirs is the best!!

I used fords diagnostics equipment. Not sure on forscan, may be able to do it . I would but an elm327 adapter from tunnel rats and down load forscan then have a play.

Best thing for you to do first is check the part number that on your current GEM, and if the second last letter is C then the one you mentioned will be fine for your needs, however if the second last letter is D then you are best to find one with a D.

Basically there are 4 different GEM’s A,B,C and D. A being the most basic and D being the most advanced.

In my old mk6 I upgraded from manual central locking (Gem with second last letter of B ) I replaced this with a gem with D so I knew it would be capable for more upgrades without having to reconfigure it.

The code I put above is the one that is fitted in the car. It’s an ST so should have the best module I’d have thought which can only mean someone has been meddling with it. Could that code be from a 5 door?

The ST doesn’t necessarily have all options for the gem module, probably the titanium would have more options, the part numbers are not door quantity specific, which is why if the advert doesn’t state how many doors it’s from you should ask the seller. If he doesn’t know then just avoid that one and find another.

Thanks for your help, it’s much appreciated 👍
