Coolant tempature OBD reading 70 degrees

Featured Replies

Hi was just wondering when I view my coolant temperature via torque app it shows as 70 degrees once fully warmed up the needle stays half way and gets there within a mile as anyone else checked there coolant temperature via obd reader please share

The car is s 2007 1.8 petrol duratec he

60k on the clock

I don't know what it should show.

on older cars the temp guage on the dash had a live wire feed to it. the other wire from it went to the temp sensor in the cylinder head/water ways in the head, which varied the resistance between the wire and earth according to temperature. this gave what i would call a proper coolant temperature reading.

on your car the temp guage does not work this way. it is controlled by the ECU and what the ECU tells it to show is presumably from various other things ecu has connected to it. But is does not show a true reading like the old type would. the ecu seems to tell it to read normal which seems to be half way even if the coolant temp has had no chance to really get that high. I don't know why ford did this. the old way was simple and reliable.

70 is fine is below boiling point engines can run up to 230. If you are concerned do a flush.

I thought it should be around 90 degrees

Thermostats usually open around 90 degrees so it doesn't look like it was fully warmed up. The temperature gauge in the cluster indicates around mid way over a wide range of temperatures so it isn't a useful indicator that the engine is up to temperature. It will need more than a mile to get fully warmed up, especially in the winter with the heater on. What does it indicate after 10 miles?

The temp gauge goes up to half way after about a mile and never goes higher or lower I believe this is normal for these gauges crap design but after a 15 minute drive and with my obd plugged in via torque app it states coolant temperature 69 degrees and dont go up or down there is hot air coming in via vents with heater on I am assuming the coolant temperature is too low for this engine checked over cars and all around 90 degrees when fully warmed up what you think maybe thermostat playing up

if you have enough heat from the heater within a reasonably short amount of time I wouldn't worry about it.

Hope this helps....

Just check if there is a flow from the thermostat to expansion tank pipe when engine is cold, I would say there should be none.

Ok I'll try that

If the top hose is hot at 70, then I think that means the stat is either stuck open or opening prematurely.

Yes I drive it for about 10 miles obd still says 70 degrees the hose from the stat is warmish not red hot

Has anyone been able to check what coolant temperature there car is once fully warm mine still won't go above 70 degrees unless standing still with engine running

I did, via maintenance screen. Temperature at parking, after 20 mile drive is between 71 to 73 degC. Engine is 1.8tdci, 85kW

Thanks for that Ned anyone tested a petrol engine out

Anyone else who could check please

My temperature (a 2005 1.6 petrol), stays rock solid at 85c. The only time it ever shifted is when I had a heater matrix leak where it went off scale! LOL

Sorry Simon, I don't even understand your question LOL 🤣

Keep hold of the button on the indicator whilst turning key you get into a menu that goes through different tests and I need you to check engine temp

My temp gauge reads ±90° the engine is a 1.8 Duratec on LPG

The dash trick displays the engine temperature

2 fast 4 u could you do dash trick and tell me what your engine temperature is once fully warm please

From stuff I read on t'internet, it appears that the 'dash trick' simply reads the coolant temperature. Where is the temperature probe located on the engine if it reads the 'block' temperature on a Mk2? (Darned if I can see anything)

Sorry no can do. I only have the car a few weeks and are not familiar with doing these sort of things, actually I'm afraid of doing it.

When the engine is at working temp, the needle of the gauge is pointing exactly between the 60° and 120° mark so for me it's 90°

Yes indeed, that is exactly 90c, mine runs a bit cooler, but with it having no power at all, it doesn't need to run any hotter LOL
