Fiesta ST-Line 140 'Missing' Torque Mystery

Featured Replies

Out of circulation for a while but back here with a possible overlooked query? (Apologies if I've missed it somewhere?).

On our third 1l ecoboost Fiesta:  Zetec S (125), Red Edition (140) and currently ST-Line (140). Possibly changing again in the Spring/Summer. Considering an ST but will probably end up with another St-Line, 'X' this time, (140) unless new ST is noticeably 'quieter'/more compliant in its ride compared to the outgoing model which we tested at length, twice but was simply too fidgety, harsh and noisy in its ride in direct St-Line back-to-back comparison. Simply not for us despite desperately wanting it to be! Absolutely not a 'tourer' by a long, long way. Yes, I know its not meant to be!

So, the torque quoted for our current '66 reg St-Line is 147lb/ft with 155lb/ft on over-boost. With this it's 'real world' performance is outstanding and helps make the car an absolute joy to drive and have a little bit of brisk 'B' road/greens fun, when safe to do so. A tad less turbo lag when pressing on over such roads and it would would be perfect. However for the current 'new' model Ford quotes only 133 torques also with no over-boost mentioned. A little strange perhaps? Magazine articles, web content et'all either totally ignore this or briskly and conveniently rapidly pass it over using various forms of simplistic creative writing. Do I feel the all-powerful God of Emissions' hand fiddling away in the background? Does anyone know? Can anyone shed any more light on this? I guess having a six-speed 'box might mitigate things a little? however a circa 60-65kgs extra kerb weight (1 X Sm/Med adult) will not. From detailed performance figures mainly found on the internet from various sources suggest an almost identical performance outcome between the older and the current 'new' model, allowing for 'gear-change gaps'. I stand to be fully informed and corrected! and apologise in advance for any 'typos'.

Addenda:  Recently seen in local supermarket car park (North Yorkshire) sometime last week a 'Storm Grey' 5-Door 'ST' on a '19 plate. It looked very good in this colour, in the metal, even when a little mucky. Looked it up on the internet, well tried to, and could find nothing on it at all. News articles, price, any 'For Sale' anywhere, the colour available as an 'ST' etc etc - (apart from the run-out ST200 model which I was aware of). Can anyone shed any light on it please?

Don't recall ever seeing the Mk 7.5 Fiesta being quoted as having 147 lbs/ft, I think the Ecoboost in the Focus had around this figure. Only ever seen the 140 Fiesta quoted as 133lbs/ft (180Nm) with155 lbs/ft (210 Nm) on overboost.

As you say, current Ford literature doesn't mention the overboost figure for the Mk 8, only the normal 180Nm, however I have seen a few road tests that still mention overboost and quote the 133lbs/ft (180Nm) and 155 lbs/ft (210 Nm) figures. Afaik the engines in the Mk 7.5 and Mk 8 are substantially the same.

I have had 2 Mk 7's but non ecoboost so can't make a direct comparison. The Mk 8 does however feel a more substantial car altogether, and there is a weight gain as you mention. One or two members who have had Mk 7.5 and Mk 8 140s have reported that the Mk 8 does feel a little less lively. No doubt one of them will be along to comment. I have done some pretty long drives in mine and find it's a refined cruiser, while still being a fun drive on the twisty bits.

Certainly know what you mean about the ST - I could't have lived with the Mk 7.5 on the roads I drive, and am still unsure about the new one. Those who have had both have reported the Mk 8 is much more compliant suspension-wise, I've only had a quick "spin round the block" so far, but found the seat rather a tight fit and not that comfortable, and I'm not a big chap by any means!😀

I think you are correct there. I only ever saw the MK7.5 ST Line Fiesta 140 with 133lbs/ft and 155lbs/ft on overboost.

I think the MK8 140  is still the same figures.

Having owned a 2106 140 and now a 2019 ST-Line X 140 I can't feel much difference in the performance. The MK7.5 may have been fractionally quicker on acceleration and I would expect it to be based on the extra weight but the MK8 is much more refined and still just as much fun on a twisty road.

When the Mrs first got her St Line X (140) 2 yrs ago ish, I said in previous posts that my Mk7.5 St Line was definitely much faster olunder acceleration. Having had my own Mk8 now for a good few weeks, bearing in mind it is still bedding from new, I still stand by the Mk7.5 having a much faster acceleration, especially when the turbo kicked in and it took off. The engine note also seems a lot higher pitched and more tinny on the Mk8, as if it is a lot more revvy.

The Mk8 has a load of brilliant, great features but not sure it needed a 6 speed box in it, maybe it is this that makes the drive/acceleration/noise seem below par.... Not sure.

Would love the drive train from the 7.5 in the 8.... A bit of one and a little of the other!

One more thing, was faffing earlier after starting the car and accidently caught the accelerator. The car was out of gear and I notice that the Mk8 revs will not go above 4000 with the car stationary and out of gear.... No real need for it to but it is something I found accidentally.

On the brighter side, I got to have a little play with the lads AMG over Xmas as he was home... Now that is a whole different ball game to our Fiestas... Haha.

The Mk7.5 ST-Line does the same thing. It's limited in neutral to 4000rpm

Haha, never noticed they did this until yesterday.

Now the mists of last night's overindulgence are clearing, had another thought on the original point. As discussed in other threads, the new Puma comes with mild hybrid 1.0 ecoboosts giving up to 155ps and 240 Nm (about 170 lb/ft) of torque. I understand this is to be rolled out to the Focus and Fiesta later this year, so could be worth hanging on and taking a look at that.

If the ST-Line Fiesta gets that drivetrain it could make more sense for most people than the "full fat" ST - I'm certainly interested myself to see what it's like.

PS On the "Storm Grey" ST question afaik the only metallic grey that's been offered on the Mk 8 is "Magnetic", but "Moondust Silver"  is pretty similar to the old ST200 shade I think.

Thanks everyone so far. (Great start from 'eb' !!) ...Lots of informative info eg 133 torques, don't know where I sourced 147 from? Grey/silver addenda 'ST' query now sorted too.
