Full tank gauge

Featured Replies

I filled up the other day, full tank but did put ever so slightly more in past the first cut off click.

I noticed my fuel gauge needle has hardly moved from full and the digital readout says 348m left, which didn't seem to drop either from the few minutes I glanced at it while driving.

I presume its just where I over filled.

Anyone else had this happen?

sometimes the miles left shown increases as you drive. If you drive uneconomically then fill up, the range will assume you will drive in the same way. but then if you start driving economically for a few miles, the range recalculates. I noticed that this week. On filling up it said 507 miles, about 10 miles later it said something like 530.

I always fill right up and I reckon the needle never drops until I have done at least 30 miles. (mk7.5 - 1.5tdci - Econetic)

Yes forgot to mention that, it did go up as well but only 1 mile to 349miles left.

I have done about 25miles since fill up as well.

It’s started to drop.

one thing I noticed today is my average mpg shot up suddenly I was at 38mpg went into 5th gear down a long stretch of road and went up to 41.6mpg.

i have been driving all week  economically and it’s slowly crept up to that over time.

I reset the mpg counter today before I left for work.

If you brim fill the tank the fuel is a higher level than the sender float and the gauge won't move until the fuel drops to the level where the float begins to drop. The miles left reading will also not drop until such time. Three things you need to watch when brim filling the tank, 1, a certain amount of fuel may syphon out through the tank vent, although this is unlikely as the vent is usually in the top of the filler neck so higher than the level of fuel, 2, you could damage the sender unit and 3, you could get an air lock in which case you would have to syphon out enough fuel for air to enter through the tank vent.

Heard that elsewhere as well, I will stop at the first click in future. It's starting to drop ok now.

On the subject of my mpg shooting up suddenly, I just remembered someone mentioning it can be quite erratic at first after an mpg reset.
