Fiesta 1.4 Diesel power steering

Featured Replies

Greetings.

I have a 2003 Fiesta 1.4 duratorq….alternator went, £40 outta the scrap yard....almost on but belt not sitting right...reconnected battery and give it a jag with starter to get serpentine belt home...forgot to disconnect battery so went to tighten positive to alternator and socket extension touched Power steering high pressure line...big spark and flash...

Started car and red fluid was pishing out of a pinhole caused by the arc...ffs

Had to replace high pressure pipe between pump and rack (didn't drop sub-frame)….didn't put new Teflon seals in either...trying to bleed it but seems to be foam when I stop engine...any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

Foaming means air, you can get new teflon seals I will edit with the part number.

Link to the thread with part numbers and special tool requirements for fitting the seals.

Teflon seal part number is:

Ok....got it sorted....tried all the tricks from Haynes and various forums, but to no avail....turning lock to lock slowly with engine off, a few (a lot) times....same with engine on....always same result....a frothy mess.

Finally found a solution here

Noticed that when engine was started, the level of PS fluid dropped significantly, so the system sucked more air....It would never have bled properly....thought I would have to disconnect it at the rack, which, believe me, is a new hell if your lying under vehicle on a cold, frosty morning in January...

Anyways, just started car with PS reservoir cap off, and poured more ATF in as the level dropped....this did the trick, but you need to be quick...it would be easier with an assistant..Took it for a test drive and steering working well, no noise from pump, and fluid level remained stable with no froth..

The only problem I have now, is that I damaged the heatshield that covers the rack....one of the screw-holes pulled through....put a bigger washer and a jubilee clip round it as it seems rather flimsy...The cars due MOT next month...is this bodge ok for the MOT?

Edit:- Just seen your answer Cal844....Thanks, yes, that was what I was worried about, as I didn't replace them, just used the old ones...the liquid is bubble free, for now...if it is getting air that will probably be the culprit...fingers crossed

Your heatshield repair will be ok for an MOT, best of luck with the issue, now you have a solution if the issue recurs
