Broken Spot-weld

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone !

I’m new here & and have recently just become the proud owner of a 2017 Ford Fiesta 1.6 EcoBoost ST-3 5dr !

Im looking for some advice or opinion on my situation.

I hand a broken spot weld on the inner drivers side door just below the door hinge. (Please see attached image). I’ve taken my Fiesta back to my local Ford dealership which is where I purchased the Fiesta from. It’s currently under warranty until March 2020. They have investigated it and have simply attempted to cover it with Touch up paint and told me that this is something to Not worry about and only come back if it gets worse.

I don’t agree with this and personally feel this is not the best way to repair it. Would anyone be able to advise me on what you think should Be done or is it okay as it is ? Im worried overtime this will get worse and I’ll no longer be covered by the manufactures warranty.

thanks everyone ! spacer.png

The reason could be that the spot weld that holds the captivated  nut that the door strap bolts through inside the A post has failed, the question I would like answered if it were my car, is why it should fail, is it a fault at manufacture or fatigue caused by the door being 'over' opened at some time? It's not so much as what the fix is, more like what caused it. If you belong to one of the rescue services you could ask an engineer to look at it and give their educated opinion or an independent motor inspector.

was the photo taken before they painted over it?  if they have painted over it after the photo and the paint has not cracked I would probably not worry about it. Not sure how the warranty might work on this, if it gets worse in April (after warranty expired) will they still honour it as you reported it during the warranty period. Also if you force then to do a better repair, how is that going to be done? will it be a bit of a bodge? eg. someone scrapes paint off, uses a Mig welder on it and you end up with an uneven lump of weld there, or they then grind the lump down and you get small burn marks elsewhere from the grinding wheel.

The 54 plate Focus I had for a few years up until recently at some time had the door strap torn out of the A pillar and the repair method had been to weld the pin bracket onto the pillar, the weld looked like popcorn had been glued on around the bracket and then painted over, a complete bodge!

The best way to affect a repair would be to drill out the spot weld and then mig weld it.
