Hi

Has anyone ordered and had Smartguard paint and fabric protection put on their car's?

Do you think it has made any difference in the paint finish?

Don't bother, I wouldn't have it for free. Probably do more damage to the paintwork when the monkeys apply it than anything else. Polish and protect properly and you will have a better finish and more durability.

Yes, I ordered it and would recommend it. It put a good protective coating over the paint

Lol, i have actually been offered the smartguard for FREE!!! heehee

What is it exactly? Im thinking its like a layer of polish that is like having a sheet of plastic protecting the pain and the

fabric protection is similiar. Also does the colour of the car depend on the finish it might provide? Mine is black B)

If i didnt take it, what products can i get that would do a similiar job?

Mixed reviews then!

I've got no experience of it but if it's free and providing you're not a detailing freak then I'd take it like a shot. It must do something otherwise there wouldn't be a huge industry for these kind of products.

I can't speak on the specifics of this product, having searched round the web all I can find is a ridiculous promo video for it on YouTube.

The other products in this vein (among other) are Supaguard and Diamondbrite, they are hard synthetic sealants which sit atop the paint, I would assume that this one is similar.

Advantages

Paint sealants do have their place - I use one during the winter to protect the paint from the harshness of salt/mud/chemicals. They do make it harder for dirt to cling to the car, therefore making washing slightly easier.

Disadvantages

No sealant has the durability claimed by some of these manufacturers. Diamondbrite and Supaguard both need 'topping up' with a product known as a conserver. You add this to your wash and it rebuilds the protection - I'm not convinced at all. I never ask any sealant to go for longer than three months, after that I strip it entirely and reapply it fresh.

If you're having the sealant dealer applied - I am willing to bet that the protection offered will be minimal. Car washing on dealer forecourts is archaic, applying these products properly takes good prep and thoroughness, something the cars on a forecourt do not get. If they have used unsafe washing technique and swirled our marred your paint, you're then sealing in the imperfections anyway.

If you polish your car yourself, or use a non wax safe shampoo (Fair Liquid for example), chances are you'll strip off the sealant anyway.

If you do want it - ask for the kit, and then have someone who knows their stuff apply it, rather than the dealer.

My personal option would be to not apply it (maybe just get the fabrics treated) and then buy a good quality sealant like Finish Kare 1000P or Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection. A simple wash, followed by one of these every three months or so, with gentle washes in between, will give you far better protection and shine.

I was offered a product called GardX by my dealer and I did seriously look into it. I asked the dealer for more info and they sent me to this website to view a video explaining how it worked:

Now being reasonably scientifically minded I have large issues with the diagrams they use in that video - its just plain misleading tbh.

I'm also not terribly sold on it thanks to the music over the top. However there is one massive reason not to buy this product......

You have been warned!

Weird porno music and Mike Brewer ftw! That's such an odd video, I wouldn't trust it either to be fair.
