Squeaky Gear Stick

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have a 2013 Fiesta Zetec S and recently I’ve started to hear a squeak coming from the gear stick, it sounds like it’s coming from one of the linkages, I mainly hear it when I go up and down and never when I go across? Anyone have any ideas what this could be? Maybe a little grease or should I get it checked out?

Thanks

Lift up gear gator and spray linkages with a little wd40 or ptfe spray(dry) , should solve the squeak.

I had a little can of silicons grease knocking about and sprayed that on it didn’t really do much maybe WD40 should do the trick thanks!

Your problem might lay at the gear cable linkages/selector at the gearbox and the creaking noise is being transmitted from the gearbox to the gear lever ?

To access these cables & pivots first pop your bonnet and then remove all the air filter box & pipes, then look down at the gearbox and you'll see a black plastic cover, this is simply clipped on, 6 clips lock onto the gearbox casing, when the cover is off, have a good look at the cables & pivots, if it's like most Fiesta's everything will have dried up and gone rusty, you need someone in the car and get them to go through all the gears and you blast everything with WD40, most likely the noise will go and changing gear will become much easier, after spraying the WD40, allow it to dry up, then spray on some thicker/silicone type oil, then refit the plastic cover and airbox.

Cover and selector linkages looks like these....

I see thanks for ur response! Is this for  an older fiesta? As I had looked online before just to quickly check and I noticed most of the guys with similar suggestions like urs it applied to the older fiestas, as some of the parts shown in pics were different to how my gear box and linkage/selector looked, I will have a look at the gearbox end like you have suggested as I hadn’t thought of that and will update!

Cheers

Did you get someone in the car to keep going through the gears as you blasted the cable with WD40 ?

I haven’t had the chance for someone else to go through the gears for me I’ve only tried it myself as I can spray them whilst changing them too, I’m not really sure if the grease is getting right in the joint.
