Issue starting my 2006 fiesta zetec s 1.6 petrol

Featured Replies

Hi was hoping anyone would have any hints or tips on what my issue could be. I'm a first time driver and this is my first car so I'm a complete novice. I purchased my 2006 ford fiesta zetec s 1.6 petrol in May 2019, and on and off have had an issue when starting the car. When I twist the key to get the car started the dashboard lights up, radio and air come on and it would seem the car was ready to drive, but would then cut off like it was dead. Other times I would twist the key and it would make a chugging sound, not start atall and I'd have to turn the car off and start again. In any of these situations the car has started on the second attempt -sometimes taking 3 or 4 tries. This has been an intermittent issue as some times the car starts fine first time. I have tried twisting the key slower as I think I wasnt giving the cpu enough time, and have also tried holding when twisting the key. I have also replaced the batteries in my key -nothing seems to make a difference. The cold/hot weather doesn't seem to have any effect and neither does whether it's been used continuously or whether it's been parked up for a few days. Any help would be amazing, thankyou!

Sounds more like an engine fault than ignition (possibly fuel pressure related).
Btw, the key battery has no bearing on ignition functionality, the battery is purely for the central locking and the immobiliser chip it contains is seperate and passive (needs no internal power).
I'd get a mechanic to check everything out, read any fauly codes etc then proceed from there.

Could possibly be starter motor related as well, but I agree it definitely sounds mechanical rather than electrical to me.
