Fiesta 1.5 TDCI 2015 cambelt troubleshoot!! help??

Featured Replies

Hi all,

this is my first car which I bought used 6mnths ago. A few months in and it stared making a sqealing noise when I turn it on, but the noise disappears in a few minutes or as soon as you start driving.

Yesterday, I went to the official service shop where they told me my cambelt was in really bad shape and that I need replacing it immediately.

This is a Ford fiesta 1.5Tdci 2015 (95HP) with just 108.000 km driven. They want to do totally cambelt replacement (the total set with the waterpump and all other parts) and some sort of ribbed belt (PK belt?).

So, what are your thoughts? Does it really need this kind of work or are they just trying to put a big hole in my account?

P.S. I have bought it from an official Ford shop, and I have a 1-yr warranty on motor, clutch. Could they have known of this malfunction when I bought it?

What should a girl do? It's my first car, so I need a lot of help.

Thanks!

The cambelt is part of the motor so if they gave you a year's warranty 6 months ago I would be inclined to see what they say.

That particular engine its suggested 100,000 miles cam belt, water pump and tensioners changed. As you have only done 67,000 miles then it should be okay ,i guess the squealing will be the Ribbed  belt also known as the Aux belt needs tightening if not on a self tensioner(or yes could be water pump) in which case yes its the whole lot needs doing.....Or as still in warranty take it back and get them to check it out...

I got second opinion, and the motor hasn’t even been opened, so the other service were wondering how in the hell they even saw the cambelt. I went with the other ford service opinion.
the 1-yr warranty is basically nothing 😞

how can the 2nd opinion be sure they did not undo the top of the cambelt cover and pull it back a bit and look in there with a torch.

It may well be that it is a con. Trouble is with cambelt, if it breaks (or as sometimes happens, it does not snap but the teeth shear off so the timing goes out of sync) the pistons hit the valves and causes major internal engine damage.

You can't really take any chances with a cambelt. So what's the squealing? if it is a faulty cam belt tensioner or water pump (water pump is driven by the cam belt) then these could cause cambelt failure.

But the problem might just be caused by the ribbed belt (or ribbed belt tensioner) which drives the alternator and aircon pump. If that fails it won't cause internal engine damage (but might leave you stranded somewhere).

I think you should visit the dealer you got it from. talk about an engine fault and you understand it's covered by the warranty. They might have a look and show you what it is that's wrong and even if they say it's not covered by the warranty for some reason , at least you will know what it is. But you really want a mechanic to be showing you what's wrong, not a receptionist telling you 3rd hand or something like that,
