MOT Fail, Headlamp Leveling Device Inoperative?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

First time poster so please bear with me on this one!

I had my Ford Fiesta MK6 2008 in the garage for its MOT and it has failed. It has 'Headlamp leveling device inoperative nearside front [4.1.5(a)]'. The guy at the test center told me that they can't repair that and I'd have to see an Auto Electrician to get it fixed, possibly a dodgy wire/fuse/broken motor. Is there anyone who's been in a similar predicament who could help?

Thanks!

Does he get commission from the auto electrician?

It's probably just a knackered motor.  You can swap it yourself in 10 minutes.  If you've got a multimeter it's worth checking there's voltage to the motor, and a good earth from it, before buying any parts.  You might even find it's just a dirty/corroded plug and need no parts at all.

Yeah I thought it was a bit dodgy that they couldn't repair it for me! I've got a Multimeter somewhere, I'll have a look in the garage for it. Need to try and locate the motor first though!

Motor is normally on the rear of the headlamp unit.

It's a dumb question so forgive me already, if i just buy a new headlight unit will that include a motor?

Not sure, you could obtain a s/h unit from a breaker, there's plenty out there for around £30, that's for a complete light unit as I doubt they would jus supply the levelling motor, and if it doesn't work you can return it. There are motors listed on eBay but you'll have to go through the listing to see which one is compatible as the same motor probably fits more than one particular model, check by part number.

New Headlight unit for a Mk6 includes the levelling,

Bought some more headlights from a different car. Installed them with no issues and they look a lot nicer. The left headlight leveller works now! But unfortunately the right leveller doesn’t now!

Swap the leveller from your old light, it's literally a few seconds to do once the light is out!

Rotate anti clockwise i believe

As above, they literally just twist out.  Can't remember which way but if it's not one then it has to be the other!

Counter-clockwise or clockwise depending on which side then unhook the ball end of the plastic pin from the socket on the reflector lens bracket.

Best practice is to have the adjuster wheel set to 0 before removal but a bit moot unless the light you're removing it from has failed at it's lowest position.

You may be able to twist the pin eith needlenose pliers if you can get enough clearance.
