Air Con Problem

Featured Replies

Does anyone know how to check the air con for leaks etc... on a 1.6 Focus 02

After getting it recharged it only seems to last through the summer?

Is this something I can check myself at home?

The garage who re-gases it has a legal obligation to check for leaks before filling the system with refrigerant. If you hardly use it, it's most likely the compressor itself leaking.

If it lasts through the summer the garage won't detect a leak.  Even if it lasts 2 weeks the leak is usually too minor to be picked up on their ~1 hour long vac test.

If you've got the equipment, you could pull a vacuum on the system at home and leave it overnight or longer to check for leaks.

You then need to pressurise the system with Nitrogen to see if you can hear a leak hissing anywhere.  If no obvious leak is found, you'll need to have UV dye added and run the system whilst watching for leaks with a UV light and yellow specs.
