Number Plate Led Lights

Featured Replies

Hi all ive just bought a pair of number plate led lights from my local car shop. silly me has just got home read the back and it says these bulbs are intended for off road or show purposes only. They are not intended to be used for regular driving conditions. So no doubt if i put these on theres a chance that

1. could get stopped by the police

2. could fail a MOT.

So it best if i go back with them and get normal ones what do you all think cheers alan.

I wasn't aware they were illegal :o

They should be a plus to the police (as long as they aren't multicoloured  )making our plates more illuminated :P

you should be ok as they are going in the number plate.

i changed mine to a xenon look white instead of the standard yellowish look ones think it looks betta and is more visible to be honest

So are we coming to the conclusion that they are Legal or Ilegal?

Going to order some up tonight but got my MOT coming up and dont want the car to fail cause of them

I would be extremly surprised if it failed an mot for leds in the number plate.... sure a few new crs now have them fitted as standard, you could always play it safe and have a set of normal no plate bulbs in your pocket when you go for test but i would doubt you would need them as most mot testers will just look to see thay are on not what shade of white they are.

Or what you can do were ever you take your car for the MOT give them a ring and ask them over the led has number plate lights. see what they say.

Should'nt be a problem like mines due 1st may and iam putting mine in on the 16th april like i did last year all that will happen is if your MOT is due like you said on the 22nd april and say you put it in next week what will happen is your old one will run up to the 22nd and the your new one will take over from then.

On the subject of your bulbs…

Are they illegal, most likely yes probably because there not E marked

Will they pass a mot? I too would be very surprised if they didnt

Will you get stopped by the police? again very doubt full, but by putting any non standard item on your car you are giving the police a reason to pull you over which may lead to other discoveries. So if you fit the bulbs but make sure the rest of your car (tyres etc) are 100% legal.

On a safety point (and here I have never seen a number lit with these bulbs) you might consider how bright they are to following traffic, you dont want your number plate so bright it becomes an irritation to the following car which in-turn may distract the driver from seeing your brake lights come on in an emergency.

Might book it in for next week then. That way if there is anything wrong I can drive it away and fix myself?

I think I will arrange my MOT for before I fit them just incase.

Throw them in once mot is over all good. :D

Car passed the MOT so I am now going to invest in some of these bulbs. What I have been wondering and searching for however is to see if there is an LED unit available rather the bulbs? Similar to that on the BMW
