Odd starting issue on mk7 zetec-s 1.6 Ti-VCT

Featured Replies

specs of vehicle: the 1.6 Ti-VCT. re map by mountune, full sport exhaust system cat included, silicone intake pipe.

For a good while now my fiesta has had a funny starting issue in that, it will crank and fire as it should. As soon as it goes to let the revs settle for the first few seconds the revs will sit below 1,000 sometimes as low as 500 if I do not touch the throttle it will either struggle to keep running then return to normal idle or stall. If I keep my foot on the throttle and say keep it around 1,500 rpm, it stays smooth so no unsettled idle and then I know it’s passed it bad starting period because the revs will then take themselves up to 2,000 and then when I release the throttle goes back to what it should be. After that it drives with no problems at all.

There are no problems while driving, there are no fault codes, I am a mechanic myself and haven’t been able to diagnose it, I also took it to ford they couldn’t find anything and i even took it to an independent specialist

work done so far to solve the problem : had the ecu and map updated to latest version by mountune - made no difference, checked timing-it was out by half a tooth at the crank, corrected, made no difference, replaced vvt solenoids on both intake and exhaust- no difference

The work done so far was at the recommendation of the independent specialist. I have updated him on the situation and he said he would do some further investigation.

I was wondering if anyone else had this starting problem and what was done to solve it before i keep chucking money at it on possible problems.

Had the same problem on stock 2009 zetec s 1.6, i cleaned the throttle body and disconnected the negative battery terminal for 1hr to reset everything, worked fine after, might work for you?

Hi. Have you had success with the battery lead off? I have a similar problem on a 1.6 2006 Mk5. Checked & cleaned everything and replaced fuel pressure regulator and intake seals.
