MPG

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

Just a quick one, got a 2019 Fiesta Vignale and have filled her up fully about 5 times now. Everytime I have only got about 250 miles out of it. Does that sound a little low?

What engine and gearbox?

Its the 125 Ecoboost 6 speed

Seems a bit low.   I get about 350 miles to a fill up with the Ecoboost 100.   Wonder if it might improve a the engine frees up.

I get similar in a 100 mapped to 150.  Generally a 9-10 mile commute each direction, so not a long drive.  Add to that I've noticed a significant decrease in mpg due to the cold versus when I first collected the car in July last year.

Yes, I also get similar to Bob on that basis. Just going by miles per tank Is not the most reliable way to check mpg though. Have a look at the average mpg figure on the cars trip meter ( it's not 100% accurate, but generally only a few mpg out, usually optimistic). The best method though is to calculate it yourself on a  "brim to brim" basis. Fully fill the tank, zero the trip meter, next time you fuel the car, fully fill the tank again, divide the number of miles covered by the amount of fuel used to get your mpg.

Brim method only works if you use the same pump, otherwise that's not accurate either.  I've had my suspicions before but it was very noticeable this time.

I had to use a different pump on my second-to-last fill which has thrown the MPG figures out.  At the time I thought it seemed odd, about 3 litres less than I expected and 57mpg average in the middle of winter...  Back at the usual pump this time, got in what I would expect for an empty tank, but far more than the miles would suggest and only worked out at 47mpg average!  Of course those 2 averages together work out as the 53mpg I'd expect at this time of year.

Can't say I've noticed any particular variations like that over the (very many😞) years (and many pumps)  I've used the method, although you're always going to get very slight variations in how much you get in - ambient temperature differences for example. If you've had a very noticeable variation it would suggest the pump isn't calibrated properly - Trading Standards Issue perhaps?

I'm not sure what actually triggers the pump cut-off, but I assumed wear and tear was the cause of the early cut-off on this one.

I usually use the far end pump which is rarely in use, but had to use the very first pump this time, not sure on percentage differences between them but that one is almost always in use when I visit.

Ah, pump cut-off. If that's what you meant then yes, I've had troubles with that over the years - I've had occasions when I just gave up after so many clicks and just squeezed enough in to get to the next filling station. I thought you were meaning apparently incorrect amounts of fuel being dispensed.

Whatever, it does show the value, as you mention in your earlier post, of monitoring on an ongoing basis to smooth out the anomalies!

Yeah, I always fill to the first click to try and keep it as accurate as possible.  But as they cut-off at different 'full' amounts it's impossible to be totally accurate.

I used to do 2 clicks until I got the Mk2.5 Focus...the Easyfuel would often dump fuel on the floor after the first click! 🤦‍♂️  No such luxury on the Golf of course, but I still stick to one click unless it seems to have cut off early.  In the above instance, I think I gave it 3 clicks but was still about 3 litres less that expected.

Yeah, I'm a "one clicker" too, as a rule!😀
