Whining noise from engine bay

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Does anyone know what’s causing this whining noise? I started it the other morning and it was there, but hadn’t been there the previous day.

First I thought it was the turbo, but the noise goes up and down with the engine revs and if you press on and off the accelerator, the noise follows the engine revs, so nothing to do with turbo spooling.

thanks in advance for any ideas 😉

Don’t think it could be that. I’ve had that on my golf and was more of a hissing noise and lost power

This sounds like a good possibility. I’ll have a closer look tomorrow after work, hopefully if the rain finally stops!

Well I charged the battery and started the car. Checked with meter and it’s charging, but not under load. Also had it confirmed by the company I purchased the new alternator from. Just need to fit it now!

Can anyone tell me if  I can just remove the tension on the belt to remove it , instead of cutting the belt off , as I saw in one Youtube Video.

thanks

If I was fitting a new alternator I'd use a new belt.

Assuming yours does have a spring loaded tensioner wheel on it you need to release the tension and then take belt off the pulley. Not sure exactly what it looks like on yours.
