Cooling fan not working

Featured Replies

Hi all

ive just got my daughter her first car, a little fiesta 1.25 lx 2004, she loves it to bits and a great first car to be honest until"...........

yesterday on her way to wrk it over heated, noting to serious I think to be honest, checking it over I have noticed he fan don’t cut in at all, I run it on the drive today and again after a good 49 mins it spilled all through the filler cap.

ive checked the fan running a cable to it and it works fine, I’ve also run the engine and un plugged the sender unit on the side of the engine and the fan kicks in (limo mode for the fan) so I know that’s all ok, so is it the sender unit???? The one on the side of the engine???

any help would be great

thanks you

I am 99% sure there is only the one sensor, that is used to operate the gauge on the instrument cluster and to control the fan and engine settings. So if the gauge reads low it is likely to be the sensor, if the gauge reads very hot, then it may be something else. But also check the filler cap pressure release. The fan may need about 100C to come on, which will need the system to be pressurised. A dodgy cap can let the water out before it reaches fan temperature.

Hiya, thanks for the reply, the temp reads normal all the way through, it’s a new cap, but old expansion rank, I’ve just put a new one on tonight but now broke the return pipe to the tank 🤬🤬🤬🤬, so I’ll get another pipe tomorrow and see if the new tank and cap makes a difference

If the temp gauge reads normal (ie mid range) when the engine is hot enough to lift the relief valve on a good cap, then it all stacks up with a faulty sensor.

I have 2 cars in the past with problems with electric fan switching. This would be considered a bodge , but with stuff I had laying around at home I just fixed up a switch on the dashboard and switched it on for a bit when temp gauge went up. Not ideal but if you need to fix it quick it might be worth considering.

I’ve got a new sensor being fitted on Tuesday so hopefully this will resolve the issue, decided to fit a new expansion tank tonight moving the return pipe out of the way and as it is old the ***** thing snapped 🤬🤬🤬 all off now and picking a new pipe up tomorrow, taking it of by the block the Ali pipe the rubber pipe connects to looks minging, might need a rub down  or feeling I could end up with a few leaks

It could be the the thermostat stuck closed. The engine will heat up quickly and overheat. The thermostat is located in the front of the engine above the oil filler cap. You have to remove the alternator to get to it and it is held in with 4 bolts.

The fan comes on only when the engine is very hot. Sometimes it stays running when the engine has stopped and the ignition turned off. If the engine temperature gauge reads hot and the radiator top hose does not feel hot then the thermostate could be stuck closed. The car should reach running temperature after 5 mins running at idle. The temp gauge should be mid range. The Haynes manual gives advice on checking the thermostats to see if it is faulty.

Hi there,

Same problems, changed the sensors, fuses, tank/cap, thermostat, bled and flushed rads amd pipes. Fan comes on when sensor isnt connected and goes off when car is off.

Thermostat is a fiddly job amd i cannot think what else it could be?? I've got a 1.4 duratec mk6 2005 model. Im so stuck, cant sit in traffic for more than 5 mins or else the car bubbles and steams and loses coolant through the tank and eventually leaks out.

Help lol

It’s temp sensor if not the relays or fuses

............. or a broken wire, or a faulty switch, or a burnt out motor, or a seized fan, or something 🤣🤣
