Fiesta ST-Line 140 mpg experiment

Featured Replies

Having had my 2019 ST-Line 140 for about 6 months now it's settled at about 47mpg on my daily 64 mile round trip commute.

This has been over the winter months so I am expecting it to be around 50mpg in the summer.

As many of you who frequent this forum will know I have posted quite a bit on this topic in reply to others questions. I'm often quite surprised at the very low figures some people complain about i.e. under 40mpg so I decided to waste a bit of my hard earnt money in an experiment.

Last week the weather was much better in this area none of the heavy rain and very strong winds we have suffered from of late, plus it's daylight on both ends of my journey now so I can safely drive a bit faster.

I decide to spend the week driving like your average wally, following closer than I normally would, just under  3 seconds behind the vehicle in front, so about 80 metres behind at 70mph. I would normally be about 100 - 120 metres behind at that speed.

When accelerating I was taking it to about 4,500 - 5,000  rpm where the situation allowed ( I would normally be changing up at about 2,500 or so unless the situation demanded more)

I left my braking much later than usual when coming up to roundabouts etc, instead of lifting off much earlier.

In the queues of traffic I did the ridiculous shuffle forward/brake every time the car in front moved a cars length, instead of waiting for a larger gap then moving off so that you can often just keep trickling along without stopping.

Went a bit faster than usual on the Motorways where it was safe to do so.

Doing all of these for a week my average speed went from 42mph up to 44mph (saving about 2 minutes on my trip) my mpg went from 47mpg down to 42 mpg.

An expensive and stupid way to waste over £5 in petrol and arrive at work 2 minutes earlier. It's hard to factor in the extra wear and tear on the engine, brakes, tyres and transmission from driving like a muppet.

So apart from very short journeys in towns in cold weather,  Lord knows what you guys are driving like to get under 40mpg.

I tend to drive my wife's manual Fiesta like a diesel.  Tend not to take it over 2.5k before I change up.

Out of interest, not got this engine still got a MK4 Mondeo tdci. Anyhow, what would your numbers be if you drive it by matching the numbers aka 3rd for 30mph 4th for 40 etc.  That's how you've got to drive my car really, just curious.

do drive my 140 ecoboost like that, and have averaged 45mpg over 2 years.

It is exactly that - if you don't get out of town and are stuck at traffic lights for a long time its easy to get 35mpg - especial in London where they deliberately set the lights to change at such a short interval you only get 2 or 3 cars through at a time. This is where hybrid and electric will work.

That's not as bad as I was expecting.  Thank you, will bear that in mind when ever I change car to the mk8 fiesta.  I was looking at either 1.5tdci 120 or even the 1.0 125/100 engine.

I usually take 2nd at 10mph, 3rd at 20mph, 4th at 30mph, 5th at 40mph and 6th at anything over about 45mph.

Obviously if the situation demands it I will hang on to the gears for much longer for quicker acceleration.

Which is pretty good for that sort of driving, so I'm not sure why people would complain about that. My previous 2 litre car with less Bhp and torque than my ecoboost 140 would get about 20mpg in continuous city driving.

Ford Pass App is showing me at 33.1 mpg.

That is good for me as I am not a conservative driver whatsoever, Mpg is not a worry, I have a heavy right foot and have maybe used 6th gear 2 or 3 times since I have had this car.

I make very few runs on the motorway (airport runs a few times a year), use dual carriage ways infrequently, have had this car since Mid October and have covered about 850 miles so far.

On average I put 20 quids worth (ish) of fuel in my car a fortnight, turn the stereo up and just drive the car as I wish on that day, haha.

😆😆
