Bubbling Coolant - Normal or Head Gasket

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Had something I've never encountered before, yesterday I parked up and turned the engine off (2013 1.0 Ecoboost 125hp) and the fan was still running. Thought it was a bit odd as the temp was normal and it wasn't a long drive although I did boot it a bit at one point (nsl road). I turned the key once and the fan went off so I thought I'd have a look under the bonnet.

The coolant was bubbling, I thought at first it was boiling because the pipes going to/from it seemed very hot as well. After doing a bit of research I found it could just be the coolant being recirculated to cool the turbo but I noticed a bit of oil on the top of the engine so I'm guessing there's a leak somewhere. It seems to drive spot on though and my missus has used it for work (healthcare worker) the last 2 weeks and said it's been fine.

Any thoughts welcome.

The fan can stay on to help cool the engine yes. Your head gasket is only suspected as being bad if you're losing coolant/oil (this is usually due to it being burnt in the engine rather than a leak down the engine block) or you're getting oil in the coolant and vise versa.

key question to start with is coolant level dropping when engine cold? Then take things from there.
