FORD FIESTA TDCI 2003 'ECU' ENGINE SWAP

HI,

I'm in the process of replacing the engine in a 2003 fiesta TDCI (flood damage, bent conrod). All ancillary parts [inc ECU] are still functioning to the best of my knowledge. Can I get a bare engine, ( like for like ) ie. F6JA and use the original engines ECU? or do I need to get the ECU from the donor engine? (if I can't use the original and cant get hold of the donor cars ECU is there a workaround for this?)  On a technical note, how does the ECU detect the bare engine is an imposter, as it were?

Any ideas  or experience on this one?
