Fiesta Mk8 Dead Battery/Steering Lock

Featured Replies

Hi: After several weeks of short journeys I left my Fiesta 1.0 Titanium (30 months old and 18k miles) standing for 2 weeks.
Battery completely flat: gained entrance with key inside fob and AA boost-started me. He told me to leave idling for an hour and he went on his way. I then when I came back to the vehicle noticed that the steering was still locked.I switched the engine off and then, when pressing the push start button it failed to start and came up with: steering lock malfunction service now.

Would a new battery solve this, or does it need to go to a Ford dealer: whenever they reopen after Covid 19? Has the dead battery meant that
it will need some reprogramming?

I had exactly the same issue after a battery disconnection to fix another problem.

Called the AA back out and they showed me how to disconnect the Body Control Unit (BCU) and then reconnect it (just a simple unplug and plug back in).  It fixed the Steering lock malfunction error.

The link to the thread... (skip to page 2 for the relevant post):

A new battery won't fix the error but hopefully the BCU reset will.

MK8 batteries are dropping like flies at the moment so I'm not sure how long a new battery would buy you before it dies again if left standing.

I've been using mine for essential travel (shopping etc) for runs that last at least 45 minutes every 5-7 days after mine died in Feb.

Sounds like a good plan John if you're not happy doing it yourself.

The AA guy knew exactly how to reset the fault as he's seen a few similar ones on the newer Fords that was sorted by the BCU being unplugged.

Hope they sort it for you 🙂.
