Battery draining

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have had a Ford Fiesta for about 6 months,  it’s a 67 plate so not old.  I have to charge the battery at least once a week.  When I drive the car I have noticed that the engine runs “quiet”. The service light came on the last time the battery ran out.  Ford didn’t want to know only repairing front line workers cars, so took to local garage. They could not find anything wrong other than the battery needed charging.   Does anyone else have this problem.

Sounds like the battery is on it's way out and not holding a charge and unfortunately you probably will not get any joy from where you bought the car in replacing the battery. Your best bet is to borrow a good battery to see if that cures the problem and if it does, bite the bullet and buy a new one. Your battery specialists will be able to tell you when the battery was manufactured and there should be a label stuck on it indicating what year and date it was first charged, that will give you an idea of how old it is, probably the original battery.

I have a 17 plate Fiesta and am only driving a mile a day at the moment but have no problems with the battery as yet.   Sounds like you may need a new battery.

Several threads running on this topic, eg:

It does seem to be an issue on the Mk 8 Fiestas even before lockdown and many of us are giving batteries a regular top up on the charger.

Has anyone checked your alternator is outputting the correct voltage? A 3 year old car so presumably a 3 year old battery... so battery should last loads longer than that.. unless it's one of those new-fangled stop-start jobbies.

Have you got access to a voltmeter, can you borrow one?

Not sure what you mean by this? Do you mean when stationary or when the car is moving?

I've checked mine with a multi meter a few times and, with the engine running, it's between 14v and 15v (ish) so mine is getting the right charge back into it.

---------------

Practically every few days there's another post on here with a battery issue for the MK8.  I realise the lockdown is making this worse, but as people have mentioned it shouldn't really be happening on 2 - 3 year old cars so regularly.

One point to remember I guess, is that if you have a 10 year old Fiesta, and the battery croaks, you're not as likely to post on a Ford forum cos you kinda expect it from older cars.

The fact remains though, people who've left their nearly new nice modern cars for a week or so without use are seeing dead batteries, and that should be worrying.

Luckily we can't go on holiday or we'd be seeing a wave of *****-off Fiesta owners with sun-tans in long stay car parks waiting for the AA  😫

My 2012 Fiesta wouldn't start a few weeks ago. Not sure if it's the original battery or not (will ask my dad as it was his car, when I skype next time!). Not too many short journeys. Trip to work is 20mins one way before lockdown. I was using the usb port for music from an sd card and kept plugged in (obviously car turned off when not in car). I'm paranoid it was draining the battery. I haven't used the usb port since!
