Variable humming sound

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Hope you're all keeping safe and well.

Im going to get my 03 Fiesta booked in to the garage for a strange humming sound that has developed over the last month or two.

I am just curious to see if it's a common issue and what to expect from the garage. If it's nothing too complicated, I may even attempt at resolving it myself.

The sound is noticeable above 25mph and increases in pitch the faster you go. It also seems to cease when turning the wheel left and then resumes when re-centred. At first i put it down to a dodgy tyre i had that was worn out. I've since had that replaced so now all tyres have good tread depth and pressure so quite confident its not a tyre issue, but could be wrong. I'd assume the next issue up from that would be bearing related?

Any advice or experience with this would be greatly appreciated!

Jack each wheel in the air and check at the four points for wobble/play.(Thats hands at 9.15 and 12.30) spin wheel to see if you can hear a wheel bearing.Next check to see if you have any play/rumbling on the drive shaft jointS as it could be one of the universal couplings.
