Best value: Mk 6.5 or early Mk7?

Featured Replies

Hi, hope you're all keeping well.

My 2010 Mk7 Edge has sadly just been written off after a collision, so I'm looking to replace it with another Fiesta but I'm not sure what to go for. As is usually the case, the insurance company have paid out slightly lower than forecourt value for the car, so I might have to go for something older or with a higher mileage.

I'm in Yorkshire and most of the comparable Mk7s from 2008 onwards are around £3k, so they don't seem to have depreciated much at all. I've seen a couple of low mileage (about 65k) Mk6.5 Zetecs advertised for around £2k and they look to be in good nick. Money's tight at the moment so I'm trying to make the best decision based mainly on reliability and longevity, as I won't be able to replace it for a few years and really want to avoid big garage bills if possible.

Is it really worth paying up to an extra grand to get another Mk7, or would a 6.5 potentially provide quite worry-free motoring for a few years? I realise there's a lot of factors to consider and that no two cars are the same, but I'd guess a few people on here have owned a few different versions over the years.

Thanks

What engine have you in mind petrol or diesel?

I'm leaning towards the 1.3 Zetec petrol engine - it'll mostly be for commuting about 10 miles a day.

Ok, theres not much difference in the two models regarding petrol engines,

Had you been going for Diesel I'd have said definitely a mk6.5 because they didn't have a dpf where later Diesel engines did and created alot of problems.

Cant go wrong with petrol,

I think the mk6.5 looks better than the mk7 personally and the boot space it a bit bigger but the headlights aren't as bright as the mk7 because there a dual filament bulb in the mk6 where the mk7 has two separate reflectors for dipped and high which would produce more light.

I had a mk6.5, now have a mk7.5 .  I prefer the look of my old mk6.5 . Mk7.5 feels smoother and quieter but for short journeys does it matter? . Mk6.5 is easier to up grade radio on if you wanted to as it’s a flat front slide out radio.

+1 easily replace it with an aftermarket double din headunit where you can then easily add a reverse camera, tv tuner, bluetooth etc.
