Found Tuning Box Tucked Away

Featured Replies

Was out checking oil level this morning on a recently bought 61 plate Fiesta (1.4 TDCI) and out the corner of my eye I saw this tucked away around the battery.

I’ve done a quick internet search, it seems to be a real dirt cheap box.

I’m looking for opinions on wether it’s worth leaving on or if it’s likely to just end up wrecking the engine

I would remove it no point having a dirt cheap tuning box on your car.... it’s probably doing more harm than good.

All they are good for is over-fuelling and higher emissions.
Chuck it in the bin.

Thought as much, just thought I’d get some opinions, not a fan of binning free stuff. Gonna run the car to death anyway but no point in shortening the lifespan needlessly

If it's been on that long without you knowing, it's hardly doing any harm.

All they do is increase the fuel pressure earlier/faster to give you better response and pick up.

The suggested hike in torque and BHP is a con, it just moves peak torque further down the rev range which thinks you have more, but they do wonders for response

They never push the pressure over what the fuel pump is designed for.

A bit like a performance air filter doesn't push any more air in (I'm fairly sure combustion chambers are fixed) they just let air in quicker and cooler (sometimes)

Lots of stories about the cheap ones been terrible but they do exactly the same as the £300 ones, they just have a cheaper label

I ran my old 66 plate Focus 1.5TDCI on a dieselexpress £64 one from 1000 miles to 36000 miles, no isssues just much improved response and 5MPG better fuel economy

Blimey!, 5MPG better fuel economy is a terrific result if you only do 4 miles a week! 😀

Don't buy a diesel if you only do 4 miles a week.

I've had several remaps of varying quality and never noticed an improvement in efficiency though...would be surprised if a simple resistor type tuning box could give an extra 10% economy!

I agree that it looks like it's been there a while though, so can't be doing much harm.

That was it's best point!

Average was 53MPG before box went up to 58/59 After.

Before the box if you dropped below 60 you would have to drop to 5th to get your speed back up again, after you could leave it in 6th.

Like I said, the performance increase is a con, but it massively improves throttle response and low speed pick up hence the fuel saving
