Fuel Filter

Featured Replies

Just having a clean of the car and noticed this strange black box under the back of the car.

Never really been under, so never noticed it before. This is on my 69 reg model but the Mrs doesn't have one on her 18 reg model. Both are St Line X cars.

I am told it is a fuel filter but why does one have it and the other doesn't?

Looking closely at the pic I see one end of the box where the pipe is coming in says "tank" and I believe Kayser make filtration systems and other auto components and have a location in Poland so a filter of some sort sounds likely. Odd looking thing though - and complete guess here - could it be in some way connected with the gpf which I think the 69 plate will have, and the 18 doesn't?

I think it'll be a carbon/charcoal canister.  No idea where it'll be on the earlier car but they have been fitted to petrols for 20 years or so.

Basically they remove and store fuel vapour from the tank which is then sucked through the engine using the natural vacuum created by driving.  That vapour would otherwise be released to the atmosphere which is of course bad for the environment.

Thanks, cannot see anything like this on the older car, just the space where this locates on mine.

I did wonder if it was anything to do with the GPF that my car is supposed to have also.

Maybe keep the fuel cleaner?

Doh! Forgot about that. Wonder why they've moved it though? Or maybe they haven't? Don't know where Martin took the pic from or whether the car was jacked up or not? Afaik on the Fiesta it's behind the fuel tank but would be obscured by the spare wheel well if you were just looking from under the rear bumper.

It is under the back bumper next to the wheel well, opposite side to the exhaust.

Was just baffled as the wife's car certainly doesn't have it in this location and after a quick look, cannot see it anywhere.

Maybe the early Mk8 models didn't have one.

Had a quick look under mine earlier out of curiosity, but no sign of it on my 18 plate either. I've seen it on videos behind the tank/ahead of the wheel well on the Mk 7/7.5, not actually seen a shot under a Mk 8.

They both have evap canisters. Just 2 different locations. One at rear of fuel tank and the other version is to the left of fuel tank in a recess of tank.

Thanks for clearing that up Ian! Just out of interest, would you know where they've stuck the 48v battery on the mild hybrid versions introduced this year?

Only know where the battery is on a puma  and transit so far. That's in the boot hidden by some panels on puma and under passenger seat on transit.
