Hi all, please no horror stories I have been made redundant and very short on money.

So I have a ford fiesta 2015 econetic 1.6

And the problem I have Is I black smoke on acceleration I don’t see it as it happens unless I put my foot right down

And pretty much red line it and then everyone sees it, I don’t normally do this by the way,

But every week when I clean the car I have black soot on the bottom part of the bumper,

I have had the car carbon cleaned last year and he ran his diagnostics and he said egr was good turbo was working nicely

Dpf was regening nicely and seemed like a sound car I got it carbon cleaned due to black smoke.

So I have no check engine light never had  

Power is good

Never gone into limp mode

Mpg I get 62 and its been around that all the time

Passed mot with emissions 0.05 and no smoke on test

As I told the mot tester I was worried about the smoke he said it was all fine

I have cleaned the MAF sensor and changed the air filter

Car has got 40000 on the clock

And all seems good when driving apart from black smoke soot

 

Any ideas ???

Petrol or diesel? Could be the fuel you're using? First thing to look at is if the engine is getting enough air, under low revs the intake of air may be sufficient to burn all the fuel going into the cylinders but when under higher revs the air flow is being restricted resulting in not burning the fuel sufficiently hence the black smoke and soot.

Hi its a diesel I have changed the air filter. I think it's more when under load its happening 

It drives fine, it passes MOT fine, no engine lights, no limp mode, no fault codes, funds are low atm....just forget about it imo!  

Realistically, the DPF probably isn't sealed 100% inside the DPF can and allowing a bit of soot to pass.  This soot builds up in the exhaust as you dawdle around town.  The extra airflow from booting it once a week blows out that build up of soot.  MOT testers are required to purge the exhaust (give it a boot!) before performing the smoke test for this reason.

Thanks for replying, I am going to book it into a garage to get sorted as the smoke was bad today as I was joining the motorway, I had someone flashing me "with there head lights lol" 

Just hope it's not leaking injectors or turbo and its just a 9.99 plastic pipe.

Fair enough, let us know the outcome then.  I suspect they'll just tell you it was a DPF regen though...  If it was a split boost pipe, that should be easily picked up as underboost which triggers limp mode and the EML.  Injectors are a possibility, but for the cost of them, it's not worth replacing until they give unbearable symptoms.

PS - If you can see someone flashing their headlights, it can't be that bad!  

OK so went to my local garage. They said to try adding this to half a tank of diesel and to drive it like you just stole the car. 

So I did and its been 2 days and no black smoke even when flooring it. 

I used wynns diesel extreme cleaner I will add another bottle to a full tank when I fill up next but all is good so far. Fingers crossed. 

£11.99 fix oh and prob now only got 30mpg now I have stollen my own car. But has been fun

I understand, that is nicknamed an 'Italian Tune-up' giving it a good blast. Also the fuel cleaner will make a difference too. BTW, what fuel do you normally use, is it the cheapest you can buy, ie Supermarkets, (Asda, Tesco Morrisons, etc) or more expensive, Shell, BP, Esso, etc?

OK so that dint work... After 2 weeks of not much smoke. Filled car up with diesel on Saturday as I was down to 90miles left. And the car is smoking again. I did add another bottle of wynns to the fuel whilst filling up as well. Would water in the diesel couse a car to smoke? 

I can't make heads or tails of this.. 😓

Your car is diesel so you should be driving decent mileage on your trips out.Pottering around doing the odd local shopping trip doesn’t work👍

So I only really use the car for commuting to work 15miles there 15 back 13 of that motorway 2 ring road. And 5am so the dpf seems to be fine with that. I very rarely hear it going and if I notice it still going before I get to work I go another junction till its finished can't hear the fan going and the start stop works again. I have always had diesel cars and never had a problem like this 

Could be the DPF has fractured, what is this carbon cleaned process?

OK so just out of the garage finally as I have been putting it off. Dpf was over 50% blocked. So they as soaked the dpf on some sort of cleaner. Forced regen and all sorted. Only a little black smoke when red lining at garage but they said still loose but in the system. Hopefully that's it and sorted apart from the garage told me I should of stuck with my toyota as dpfs are not ford's strong point and they see alot of them

So after more black smoke and has not stopped smoking looks like the garage ripped me off and it was not the dpf, I took it to a dpf specialist and he advised me you have a background code  egr and when he was looking at the live data it was sticking all the time but not enough to though an engine light on. He said my dpf was is good heath and the dpf does not couse black smoke like I had. So I had the egr turned off and now no smoke at all. At last a happy drive again. Also I'm now getting an avg 72mpg. 

Hopefully my last post on this. Lol
