Sync 3 updating (or not)

Featured Replies

Downloaded Sync3 update from Ford using my VIN to hard drive. Extracted to USB drive. Have one directory

SYNC3_2807656336_Update.zip which contains the two specified files and the syncmyride folder with seven .tar.gz files in the directory on the drive which is formatted exfat.

It doesn't run in the car. Tried it in both USB ports for fifteen minutes each, Nothing.

Does anybody have any idea what to try next, please?

The SyncMyRide folder plus the DONTINDX.MSA and autoinstall.lst files need to be on the root of the drive not in a folder.

No extracting required other than to obtain these 3 items.

The tar.gz files within the SyncMyRide folder are self-extracting.

If when transferred to the usb stick you see this layout then you are all set-

Thanks Stoney. I thought of that and then copied the two files and the directory into a folder on my PC and wiped the usb drive before replacing those three items on it. I'd like to say that it worked but it hasn't done.

Downloaded it again. Extracted the three items to a different usb. Will try again in the morning.

Was going to suggest trying another USB drive, as SYNC does appear to be quite sensitive is to which drives it will read from.

No. Plugged the ipod in. Sync can read it so usb works. Disconnect ipod. Turn Bluetooth off. Master reset Sync. Try again. No.

Seems not to be reading the drive at all as there are no flashing lights. Might try putting some music on a usb drive to verify Sync can see the drive then reformat it before trying again. Wish I could force it with Forscan. If it wont play, I may be having to consider the unofficial v3.4 mod but I would rather not. Can it be initiated with Android Auto? I haven' t seen it tried.

No. Sod this. I bought a modern car so I didn't spend all my time fixing it. So far I have spent more than twelve hours failing to do a software upgrade and now find I would need to buy a new computer to use the Cyanlabs potential solution as I cannot load a .net framework on Windows7 without doing a load more work on something I don't expect to work anyway and I'm fed up with it all.  Software by Microsoft out (seemingly) of Boeing. Shame, the car is quite charming otherwise.

I suspect that Ford have washed their hands of it because it cannot be fixed like VW did with"Maps and More" which was a far worse system in the Up! (A thoroughly nasty thing with little to commend it other than a fast but very frugal engine. It was cheap and tinny, extremely noisy with wind noise that was deafening above 50 MPH and NO roadholding whatsoever. Eighteen months from new, I was glad to be rid of it . Premium brand? Phooey. Fur coat and no undergarments.)

Henry's free software upgrade looks like a cynical device to use the dealer's wallet pulling tool to get them to fit it instead. I wonder if it works any better for them than it does for us?

Ford could sell an upgrade on a known compatible USB stick of course but they don't.

Good job I carry a phone with an up to date map!

32 GB Sandisk Ultra flair brand new. Showed it to the usb port and sync read it. Progress. Loaded the three items to it and checked the drive. Deleted the two  Sandisk files. Switched the car on. Plugged the drive in. Shortly afterwards software began to update. Waiting for it to finish now. Fingers crossed.

Looks as though it might have worked. I have the .XML file to send to Henry and I'm waiting to go back out to the locked car to find out if it will show the update. Then comes the maps. If the car has to be running in order to load them, I might have to consider in-flight refuelling as well as a day off!

The secret is a new 32GB USB3 drive from a reputable source (and if you cannot find one of those, do as I did and buy it in Tesco.)

Sync updated to v3. Ford acknowledge the xml file. Next stop maps...

Or not. Now it can update, it seems to have got a taste for it. I am now downloading another update. Last one V2.3 to V3 was 2.8 Gb. This one is 8.3 which doesn't seem like maps to me. I

thought that v3.0 was as far as my 2017 car went and that the maps were about 25Gb but with the rest of the street on Ebay, I shall have to wait a while for the download to complete...

As I replied to you earlier, Sync is very choosy as it which USB drives it accepts. Good luck with the rest of your updates!

I think I'd get more pleasure sawing off my own head with a blunt breadknife! The two files in Sink my ride are both referenced in the install file. Great. One will not copy to the USB drive from either download (JR3T-14G422-BE.tar.gz)due to an unexpected error. Testing it with 7zip  shows no error. If Ford were to charge for this stuff they would be in a great deal of trouble because it cannot be done without a very extensive knowledge of how to do it. It simply is not fit for purpose which is why it is free. Were it any good, they'd make us pay for it.

Stuck again. Might be easier to tear the Sync3 out of the dashboard physically and forget about it.At least the screen won't burn you when you touch it!

Reformatted the USB drive which arrived EXfat formatted. Asked it when reformatting to restore defaults. These turned out to be FAT32. Doh! I'll try it later and if it manages to load then I'll tell Henry it is successful and ask again if it needs to be updated again. Hopefully it will then give me the map file. I have learned enough in the last 24 hours to have a go at hacking the map file in if I have to get it from somewhere else. I just hope not to have to. You have to be bloomin' clever to own a Mark 8!

A lot of the time the reason why USB sticks are not detected by sync is because the partition has been formatted to GPT and not MBR. Sync only works with MBR.

In essence you need to make sure your USB stick is (MBR partition + exFAT filesystem).

For Windows users, instructions below on how to convert GPT to MBR.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/disk-management/change-a-gpt-disk-into-an-mbr-disk#:~:text=Back%20up%20or%20move%20all,click%20Convert%20to%20MBR%20disk.

Sync finds it just fine otherwise it wouldn't return a err 05 Lst failure. I am deeply suspicious of the  second required download that Ford supplied. One has already been loaded and the other seems to be the voice files for the map files that I don't yet have. The unit is definitely running the install file and crashing so It does recognise the drive.

I don't know what to do next and after eleven hours today of getting nowhere it is time to admit defeat and if necessary, just get lost.

I found this video very useful for when I was figuring out how to update via usb

Erase your USB and format it to ExFat (its in the disc utility app if you have a Mac, not sure about windows), and then just follow the steps in the video

download using Chrome, and I use an app called the unarchiver to unzip the download, which should then give you a folder with 3 files in (1 of which is a folder with 5 other files in), which you then just drag and drop onto your USB

You can probably skip the first bit of the video, the website is slightly different with it being American but just go to the usual ford website and enter your vin to download

Turn your ignition on and plug the usb in, and then just wait... to start with its like its not doing anything, then eventually it pops up saying 'update in progress' then wait a further 20 mins or so and it will say update complete

Edit: Just realised I think you managed to sort this, so hopefully this reply helps someone at least anyway

Thanks all, I'm glad of the help. I have found a link that pulls down all the files for the map upgrade in one chunk (Map_25013789187_Update.zip) and am putting that onto an EXFAT USB drive. It looks comprehensive and should hopefully load to the drive and if it does I'll try it on Tuesday as I have a warranty issue to wrangle with tomorrow after work.

What looks like a viable set of files is on the drive. Work is only three minutes' drive from home. I wouldn't but I've got a new car to show off!

Decided to try the Ford download on a new 64 GB drive from the firm's whizzyquick Windows 10 setup. Sitting outside John Lewis while Madam shops. Software is updating and Madam has been told to take her time so I am up brownie points. Once this one is in, I hope I can get the maps next. A job for tomorrow's tea break if it is going to be 25 GB!

Well. it isn't. The software updated, didn't create a log file and so back to the car with the dongle to get it having loaded the appropriate package. Done that. All good. Have you anything more for me Henry? Yes, my boy, have a 0MB download. They really do not want you doing this, do they. I could have written an operating system in the time it takes me to do this download. (It wouldn't be so funky but it would function.)

I am guessing that Ford are waiting to validate the log file before unlocking their atlas to me. Is this right or am I finally stuffed after spending three days not updating the software.

Hmm. just the install file. I wonder...

No, smartass. just a basic header with no clue which file was supposed to be sent.

Try again later. Maybe there is some new update due. It would make sense, I have spent so long installing this one that it must be obsolete by now!
