Hissing when i touch accelerator...Exhaust? (MK8)

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I noticed yesterday that my 68plate 1.1 fiesta (12k on clock) sounded more like an ST..

When I touch to accelerator at idle, it now make a short hissing noise. I looked at the exhaust and at the back of the box it looks like there is some form of hole/leak. I'll be ringing the dealer in the morning, but Would anyone know if the hissing be linked to the exhaust and would this be under Ford's manufacturer warranty??

Thanks in advance.

Yes and probably no as it is a wear and tear part but if it has split due to a manufacturing defect, the dealer my call on Ford's goodwill. Just play nicely with him because you will need his goodwill as well!

Thanks for the reply.

Rung ford and booked in 5/10/20... Said I was worried if it's the exhaust failing after less than two years and they were sympathetic, and said that would definitely need looking at but it's a £95 investigation fee if they decide it isn't covered..

50/50 this one

95 quid to look at a split silencer. I would be wanting more than sympathy for that! The part costs less. They are trying to scare you off. Don't allow them to.

I get why they say it, in an attempt to stop people trying it on, and if it had its first MOT I wouldn't be taking it to a Ford Dealer (Bristol Street)..... Catch 22 but lads at work all saying on a 22 month old car with 12k on the clock, it shouldn't be leaking like that.....just hope they are reasonable

Can't find a price for a new exhaust on this model , so cant even get a worse case scenario costing.

About three quid for a smear of GunGum by the look of it. That just looks like a split seam.

Read Laurac's posting above. There may be no fault with the silencer at all.

Plot thickens.

Mechanic looked closer this morning and found this impact damage.... But it isn't leaking here, it's still the seam.

He thinks ford will hide behind this and I'll end up paying. If it's a new backbox , then so be it, I'll get it fixed.

Thoughts everyone?

Thanks

Well, it explains the noise. It looks mall enough to be repairable with a plug of wire wool soaked in exhaust paste, which will make a safe and durable repair.

Thanks for your time in this thread... Is it an impact strike? Guessing I'll be wasting my time going to ford?

Looks like it's been rubbing on the coil spring?  There's no way you can have caught any sort of road debris that high up, would be different if it was underneath.  I'd say that's definitely a manufacturing defect personally...

There are no discernible witness marks on the spring which is half a diameter away from the damage. I would hazard a guess that a piece of road debris was flicked up and might even have bounced off the spring but either way that is ufo damage so Ford will blame the little green men. Not worth changing it out for. That is a ten minute job.

Bit of gun gum in the hole on the side of the exhaust then?

that hole in the exhaust silencer is there to drain the water condensed inside the silencer, nothing wrong at all with that hole, mine has one at the same location 🙂

and that also is not an impact damage, there was supposed to be a sticker in that location with the part number, bar code, etc, probably burnt due to heat , I see nothing wrong here also

Oh, I can see the barcode now you mention it!

When I first saw it I thought it looked like chewing gum bit couldn't work out how it could get there...makes sense now I can see it's a sticker!

Yes, I can see the barcode now. That is not damage, is it?

The small drainage hole at the back is  not the problem and nor seems to be the silencer. The hiss is probably air. Try opening the bonnet and getting somebody to tickle the pedal while you try to pinpint it.

considering that this is a non turbo engine, so its not a boost leak, so if there is any rough idle or RPM not steady at idle then I suspect a vacuum leak.or may be it is as simple as the clip on an air hose going to the throttle body not tightened properly 🙂

Now I'm confused and don't know what to do 😂😂. I hadn't noticed it was sticker either 🙈

Car booked in with Bristol Street, Monday Morning. See what they say I reckon

In your first posting, you implied that it sounded like an ST. If you mean that it was loud and throaty, then that, together with the momentary hiss suggests that you should look at the air filter housing and all the pipes leading specifically from it to the engine as what you are describing sounds like a disconnected pipe or loose air cleaner housing lid which should be very easy for you to locate for yourself.

Had a look under the hood, nothing is loose, nor can I pinpoint it. Everyone has been massively helpful, but I didn't notice the barcode so that probably explains what I thought was "impact damage"

Exhaust was covered and you can hear it hissing but if there is a hole in it to drain water then it could be from there.

Dealer has agreed to do a full health check prior to any £95 inspection fee so I'll go with it...

Everyone has been so helpful on here . Thank you.

In this country we call it a bonnet. hoods are for Cadillacs and convertibles. I reckon it is the noise of the throttle plate moving from closed to just open that is your hiss. It is usually inaudible but if you aren't imagining it, (trust me on this; whenever I pilot a light aeroplane over water, the engine runs rough to my ear as soon as I am out of sight of land,) the techies will pinpoint it in a very short time.

Hi all.

To Finish, Ford have fitted a new back box under warranty. Still sounds a bit throaty to me, (which some of you have said is normal) but at least it's done. Will see how it goes.

Thanks for the help.
