Smax judder/misfire

Featured Replies

Hi all, new to the ford club and obviously got a question to ask.
have a 2011 smax titanium x sport 2.2 diesel manual. For the last month it’s developed a judder or misfire after driving for around an hour on the motorway. It will happen while driving along for no apparent reason. I can accelerate out of the judder or lift off and straight back on again and it will clear. All for about 5 or 10 mins and will keep doing this once it starts. Been to ford and independent garage and they can’t find the fault and no fault codes or lights coming up. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.

So, today I sprayed a can of wynns egr cleaner  in 1 second blast int air intake and it seems to be a bit more responsive and has only juddered once. Does anyone know if a dodgy egr would not set off a code or warning light.

Generally a sticking EGR would put the engine light on but maybe as it's doing it intermittently and you can pretty much stop it from happening it doesn't get a chance to say it's faulting.

Not heard of this kind of issue on a 2.2. It could possibly be an intermittent injector fault?

Hi. Thanks for the reply. So set the cruise control to 70 today and waited for the misfire. Started happening after about 45 mins but didn’t affect the cruise control. As in it stayed on and didn’t cancel out. Would I be able to record live data with forscan? At a total loss with it now as are all the garages that have looked at it. Been told a might have water in my diesel, but surely the misfire would happen at any speed if this was the case. Thanks again.

Ok. So have an update on this. Had a code come up today po113 air intake sensor. Am I right in thinking this is the maf sensor? Would this cause the car to run perfect in every way accept for the misfire when warm and at motorway speeds. I’ve also worked out that it can be made to do it in 5th and 6th gear if the revs are kept at 2200 rpms.

Hi did you ever get a resolution on this issue? This is my second SMax titanium and both have had the issue, the latest car started the misfire/judder about a couple of months ago and I have had to put up with it from Devon to Aberdeenshire over the last 2 days…. Seems to be a common fault on many of the Ford engines….

I have the same issue on my 2012 2.2tdci - Ford say there isn’t a problem, my local garage recon it is am issue that the dpf is not regenerating as it should. I have been adding dpf cleaner to the fuel and it seems better, though would love to know of a permanent solution

Same issue with my 2011 2.2 txs

egr assembly replaced

fuel filter changed

maf sensor cleaned

air intake sensor changed

still juddering when up to temperature on the motorway and poor fuel economy.

Took it to a diesel specialist in Tilbury and was told the dpf is 60% blocked so they’re suggesting cleaning it out (I’m told it could possibly be problems with the sensor on the dpf too)

it’s been painful having it mis diagnosed by different mechanics but I guess there’s so many potential issues that can cause a knock on effect with fault codes etc

I’m guessing if my fuel economy goes up to 40mpg on the motorway rather than the 30mpg I’m getting right now I can rule out potential injector issues

Afternoon all .

I am somewhat having the same issue at the moment . My 2013 tdci develops what feels like a misfire when I go any faster than 50mph who whole car shakes .

The other day coming back from town at 60 the engine light came on I managed to plug it straight in it flagged up the fuel rail pressure sensor . I am hoping it's that but having issues finding one

The rail sensor is only available from Ford as part of the rail assembly at £366.

They can be bought separately on ebay though you should be very careful not to get any dust, dirt or grit in the system when changing it.

Can you remember the exact fault code?  That should differentiate between a sensor/wiring fault, or genuinely low fuel pressure.  Often low fuel pressure is caused by a clogged fuel filter on diesels.

Defer to those above but Forscan (on my model) gives demanded and actual rail pressure - any differences there (don't watch the screen yourself - get someone else to drive? 😉 ) Codes first, then live data to investigate?

Also for both (actually anything) it's powers/grounds compare sensor output with actual output (measured with diagnostic equipment and sensors)?

I can only give the examples I find at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-uTA5we1FY&t=14s
He doesn't change ANYTHING without confirming it is faulty and will refund for parts fitted in error (unusual?)

And

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4Ro-RyXzDQ

He's a "Powers and grounds plus load test the wiring" kinda guy?

Plus this guy only cleans DPFs after fixing the faults that cause them to block (DPF rarely to blame, often a victim?)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4Ro-RyXzDQ

All useful and interesting channels who seem to avoid just changing parts if it isn't absolutely necessary. However for anything remotely fuel related I'd change the filter and look for metallic flakes (pump breaking up) whilst you're on?

Just my ideas...

With FORScan you don't need anyone to watch the Screen, you just save the journey, useful to do anyway for future reference.

You can then review it to your hearts content at any time as well as changing the Min and Max Units, change from metric to imperial, change the Time base, change from Table/Dashboard/Graph etc and as long as you also include other parameters such as Speed, RPM, Accelerator Pedal Position etc, you can work out what was happening when any glitch's happened.

The Phone versions are more convenient for Live Data.
