STARTER MOTOR

Featured Replies

My starter motor has decided not to play after nearly eleven years.I’ve been looking on the Euro parts site at the brand RTX as a cheap fix for about £128.00.Also Halfords stock a RTX for around £75.00 i don’t expect they’re the same model. Can anyone recommend these or maybe an alternative at a similar price point.TIA👍

They'll be the same thing as Halfords car parts come straight from EuroCarParts. I'd be surprised if they didn't share the same part number tbh.

Remember nothing at ECP is priced correctly, there's always a discount code that should be used to bring the price down to what it should be.

Thanks for that.I’m going have to investigate if they are the same model. No idea if RTX is a good brand👍

Buy cheap, buy twice.

I'd rather buy a good used one than a new RTX personally.

Do RTX have a bad reputation? I’ve never heard of them 👍

Yep.  Stick with Bosch, Valeo or Lucas imo.

Can you still get Lucas? Back in my early motorcycling days I remember Joseph Lucas being referred to as "The Prince of Darkness" (long before Ozzy Osbourne)!😀

So there are Lucas reconditioned starters on Ebay for about £110.Maybe they are worth considering 👍

This time last year the starter motor on my petrol 1.6 Ti-VCT packed up leaving me stranded.

I took it off and went to my friendly car part shop.

It was exchanged for a Holst one for around £60.  It was not an exact match for the one that came off, being noticeably heavier and larger.

I struggled it in and it fitted perfectly.

It's still going strong and I have convinced myself that the cranking speed is significantly stronger & higher than the old one.

You pays your money and takes your choice.

May be showing my age there!

I had an idea the OE starters on the MK1 were Lucas but they may well have been Bosch instead.

The trouble with recon is that you don't know what's actually been done.  They might just have used cheap rubbish RTX parts in the refurb...

As above, it's not a simple answer really, you've got a few choices.

Bosch is expensive 👍

See what the OE one was on your car...must have been decent quality if it's lasted this long!

If the sticker says Ford or FoMoCo the actual manufacturer should be stamped in the casing.

Oh...and think yourself lucky it's not a heavy duty stop start starter motor!!

I’m going to unbolt tomorrow.I’ve just noticed discounts are offered for old returns which is a bit of a faff if I have to post or is there an exchange on delivery ?👍

Just going back to Euro Car Parts, never just go into the store and buy anything, always, always go on their website, do a click and collect and use the code that they have on the front page for discount.

carparts4less is the online only version of ECP, they too have discount codes on the main page, they're normally a little cheaper than ECP but you've got to wait for delivery.

CP4L is £6 cheaper than ECP on a recon Bosch.

Delivery is just done by standard courier so you have to post out the old part back separately.  It's not that much of a faff though, places like Hermes will collect parcels from your doorstep if you choose the right option.  Obviously the downside is 'losing' £100 for a week or so while waiting for the refund.

The recon Bosch at ECP does look good, presumably it's been recon'd by Bosch if it's on sale at ECP rather than Dave in his shed selling on ebay lol.  It is more expensive than I thought it'd be though...  Surcharge is also a lot more than I expected.  Starters used to scrap for about a fiver each!  Price of copper can't have risen that much lately can it?

There's also a Valeo on MisterAuto for £116 (plus £60 surcharge) if this is the right one - https://www.mister-auto.co.uk/starter-motor/valeo/726045/

So just removed and like you said Tom it has the FoMoCo label, looks like it was made in India.Waiting on a price from my local Ford, could be in for a shock😂but it’s only down the road so I can hand this old one over the counter.Probably a lot more expensive but a lot easier👍

Nothing says quality like 'built in India'!  The actual make should be stamped in the casing somewhere.

You could also try GSF, if there is one near you, you could take the old one in when yo buy it, no need for a surcharge then (same with ECP).

No branding that I can see, some numbers ,but there is a layer of grime.Am I curious enough to give it a clean?Coffee first😁

Better than 'built in China'. I try to avoid buying anything made in, or sold from, China although I know it's difficult these days. Most of the sellers on Ebay seem to be based there.

This is for political and ethical reasons rather than quality.

£267.58p and there’s worse to come.A seven day wait because they don’t have it in stock🤨Maybe I’ll have to look at plan B.

  • Author

Looks like Mk1’s don’t exist anymore 😀I can’t wait seven days sorry Ford.

Aren't we already on at least plan C after discounting RTX and the recon Lucas?

Was the Valeo at MisterAuto the right one?  That's probably the one I'd go for unless you can just pick one up locally.  Do you have any other parts place nearby?  Jayar?  MPD?

Just found out all Ford parts departments in my area are closed and they don’t post.Have to travel to their regional store over 80 miles away.
