Fiesta 07: Speedometer / VSS

Featured Replies

I’m not sure if this is the right forum, please re-direct me otherwise!

My car started to do this random thing about a week ago mostly after driving off from first gear (just before I need to switch to 2nd it does this)

but, if I re-start the engine mid-drive it’ll show half the speed of the car

the ABS has been on for about a month as I’m yet to change a rear bearing so can’t confirm if that is an effect from all of this.

the engine light reads as 2 issues of  P0500 (Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Malfunction) and I did have a lil brief look to see if the wires are out or any other concerns but I can’t locate it.

lastly, the predicted fuel remaining (first line as shown as “- -“ doesn’t even show the correct amount anymore. A full tank usually reads over 260 but when I last filled it it only showed 180.

if I’m being stupid please let me know, I am hesitant in taking it to a garage but if that’s my last option I will.

thank you

Pre ABS the speed sensor used to go straight to the gearbox and this symptom was a common vss failure indicator.
Post ABS the wheel speed sensors used to calibrate the ABS system took over the job, I'd check the ABS sensors for sure, a bearing problem could be the culprit if lots of crud has worked it's way in to the system.
