Fiesta mk8 Ecoboost 100ps automatic factory speed governor ?!!

Featured Replies

Hello to all 🙂

mine is mk8 Ecoboost 100ps 6 speed automatic

I noticed that the car wouldn't go above 193 kmph ( 120 mph ) under all circumstances, it seems like its factory limited to that speed, I tried it on purpose (out of curiosity actually ) because fiesta owners here in Egypt whom cars are equipped with the auto transmission say the same thing, I tried my self , whenever I hit 120 mph the car upshifts to the 6th gear and the speed decreases, even if you are goind down hill the same thing happens and I feel that whenever as if whenever I hit 100 mph the car applies brakes on its own, it never goes 1 mph beyond that limit whatever you do !! I feel it has more power but its just limited that way !!

other friends who has the manual gearbox version they go above 120 mph without any restriction , so I guess the speed governor is only on automatic gearbox equipped cars to protect the gearbox itself, it may not be able to handle that speed, may be ?!!

Guys having the mk8 with automatic gearboxes out there did you experience the same issue ? !!

Guys I strongly recommend not to drive at that insane speed but I just wondered if anybody experienced this in the past 🙂

thank you 🙂

We won't be doing that in the UK Ahmed.😂

Lol, driven a lot faster than that - but only on a race track!😃

Don't you have speed cameras over there, Ahmad?

we have or sure, and these days they became every where 😄 our top speed limit is 75 mph on most highways , but there are some sections of the road that we know it doesn't have a camera yet, and that is where we try every thing bad 😄

so no body experienced this speed limiter issue ? is it specified by ford only for Egypt ? 😄

You must have a fast one uk spec states top speed 111mph for 100ps auto mrk 8. remember gear 6 is really overdrive if anyone can remember that. In top gear you couldn't pull a skin off a rice pudding

The 6F15 gearbox is very high geared. Final drive ratio is 3.44:1 whereas a manual is about 4.2:1 so you would reach a point where the power can't push the car anymore.

Probably get VMAX in 5th gear which is 1.00:1 ratio

let me correct you 🙂 the final drive ratio for my gearbox is 3.15:1 , the ratio you stated is for the same gearbox but on the ecosport, but the 6f15 in fiesta is 3.15 :1 , much worse 😄  on the 6th gear at speed of 62 mph its 2k rpm sharp , at 112 mph its 3650 rpm sharp 🙂

I know that the 6th gear is overdrive and that the top speed is reachable on the fifth gear, the point is it reaches 120 mph and never exceeds that speed whatever you try to do , and this is the case with all fiesta mk8 owners here in Egypt with that auto gearbox, you can sense it as you are accelerating ( on the fifth gear ) and suddenly when you hit 120 mph the car shifts up to the 6th and you feel as if it applies brakes on itself, even if you are going down hill it never exceeds 120 mph !!! I'm sure its software locked but I don't know why ?!!!

The car has neither the power nor the torque to exceed 120 MPH. The aerodynamics will not allow it. 1100 kg, 100 bhp, auto box. Egyptian temperatures. 120 MPH? Unlikely. Any quicker? Very unlikely.

Sadly, I can.😃

The latest 7 speed DCT auto (125ps) has a claimed top speed of 124, the 155ps is claimed to do 134mph and the 200ps ST, 144, so I would think it's more to do with power/torque as you suggest, rather than aerodynamics.  It still doesn't explain why it won't top 120 downhill though, when the gearing would appear to permit it, so maybe there is some sort of limiter on the 6 speed auto version in Ahmad's domestic market?

Mark 8 Fiesta Automatic

Drag coefficient is 0.32. Weight 1200kg 2640lbs. Claimed BHP 100. Height 68.3." Width 70.2."

Maths coming up. This is how you determine BHP from maximum speed given the frontal area, weight and drag coefficient of a car.

Aerodynamics use imperial measurements; blame Orville and Wilbur.

Drag resulting from weight 2640 X 0.0135.   35.64 lbs

Width times height times 0.9 is a pretty good approximation of frontal area (FA).   29.97 square feet

Which is then multiplied by Cd (0.32) X  0.00256 = .0245,

then by MPH (120) squared which is 14,400 Giving an aerodynamic drag of 353.5lbs

Add the drag through weight (35.64) and you have a total drag of 389lbs.

Total drag times MPH /375 gives the BHP required.

124.48 BHP is needed to achieve 120 MPH

That is pretty close to the quoted figure of 124 MPH needing 125 BHP, isn't it?

Working backwards from the quoted 100 BHP,

Drag at 111 MPH is 337lbs requiring 99.75 BHP.

The numbers tally then. (They should:-) )

That is as fast as a 100 horsepower Ecoboost goes.

You need 125 BHP to do 120.
