Battery drain Focus 2012

Featured Replies

Purchased 2012 Focus 1.6 Diesel second hand and battery drained overnight so I put a new £140 stop-start battery on my 2012 and it’s gone flat in 2 days. I’ve checked current draw and my meter reads 1.47 when I connect it. If I open a door it goes up to 6.89. When I lock it it drops down to 3.58. After a few minutes it drops back to 1.47. I have removed all the fuses and relays 1by1 with no drop from 1.47. I’ve also disconnected alternator lead and checked the diode circuit and that is as it should be.

Anyone got any ideas

I have a 2012 Focus 1.6 Auto petrol. It's doing the same thing, I did the same even though the battery looked great and charged up just fine. I put a new battery on and it just drains over 3 days down to 5.8volts. Lights off, dashcam disconected. I just don't have a clue.

You need to find a good local auto-electrician and ask them to investigate a parasitic current draw.

They can be hard to trace and can take a few days to test and identify.

I'm sure this would be time-consuming, but would removing all the fuses and relays (hopefully giving you a reading of zero amps) and then re-installing them one by one identify what's generating the 1.47 draw ???

Nice idea but sadly no.

Each time a fuse or relay is put back in it will potentially wake up a module or circuit which will take 20 to 30 minutes to enter sleep mode, provided of course that it's not the faulty circuit. Also removing all the fuses and relays would very probably cause several faults which would require resetting and possibly reteaching of various modules.

There are procedures to correctly trace parasitic current draws but require knowledge of how to fault find and the use of a good multimeter. Randomly disconnecting circuits should be avoided.

I did wonder, so I'm glad you've clarified / corrected things, thank you.  I'm used to older/simpler cars from 30 - 40 years ago.

Ah yes !! the good old days. I remember my Escort Mk2's, they only had 8 fuses in total and the most complex bit of stuff was a time delay relay for the 'intermittent wipers' 👍
