replacement remote key

Featured Replies

New member and new owner.

Got a few questions which I will post in seperate threads to avoid "cross contamination" lol.

Just bought a 2005 Fusion 2 TDCi.

Only came with 1 x remote key and 1 x non-remote key.

What is my cheapest option to get another remote key?

Is this something I can buy UN-programmed and then programme it myself?

Or is it a dealer/specialist job?

Thanks in advance.

You need to match the number inside the key IIRC. There are plenty of replacement keys on Ebay.  Buy a blank and get it copied.  Google "program new key ford" - it's easy.

I only had one key for my Fusion, but was able to visibly 'read' the existing key and work out the T code from which I can get replacement keys cut cheaply.

You can program new remote controls as per the instructions in the owner's handbook:

A maximum of four remote controls (including the ones supplied with the vehicle) can be programmed.

  • Turn the ignition key to position II four times within six seconds.

  • Switch off the ignition. A tone sounds to indicate that it is now possible to programme a new remote control.

  • Press any button on a new remote control. A tone will sound as confirmation. Repeat this last step for all of your remote controls, including the original.

  • Switch the ignition back on or wait for ten seconds without programming another remote control to end remote control programming. Only the remote controls which you have just programmed are now able to lock and unlock your vehicle.

The only thing you can't do yourself is program a new key transponder for the immobiliser. My workaround for this is to remove the only valid transponder that I have (from the original key) and tape this to the side of the ignition barrel so that the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) is permamently disabled. I know this is less than ideal, but it does at least mean that I can still use the car if I lose a key.

You can get a key cut on eBay from photo. I programmed a new key for 2008 focus (the immobiliser chip) by using a obd code reader and forscan software on a windows laptop. Assumed it would work on a fusion key.  Or take immobiliser chip out of non-remote key and put it new remote key. I don’t know how easy it is to get chip out of non-remote key.

I have just removed the transponder chip from a 3-button remote key. It took quite a bit of very gentle persuasion, mainly because it looks like it was fixed in place with superglue. I used a craft knife and tweezers to carefully trim the plastic from the key and after scraping away the dried glue I was able to pop the plastic chip out. It takes patience and a steady hand, but is possible without destroying either the key or transponder.
