Mk6 1.4TDCI Engine Swap

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. So my Mk6 1.4TD started burning oil not long ago. Quite early at 120k miles but I'm guessing it's down to lack of servicing from previous owners. There was a visible amount of metal fragments when I drained the oil out on my drive as well so I'm fairly convinced the engine is shagged even though it still drives and sounds fine. I've already had the car repaired after me crashing it like a ***** so I'm not really prepared to just let it go over an engine. I've already restored quite a few things on the car and it just feels like a cop out to get rid of it.

The thing is, if I'm going to spend the money on a new engine, I really don't want to have another 1.4, they are great engines but they just don't move. The car comes with a 1.6 as an option so I would imagine it would fit but would anyone be able to verify this? Any suggestions for an even bigger engine that would fit? (after all, the ST150 has a 2.0). Any suggestions as to where I get the engine from? I have gotten a few quotes from the likes of breakerlink for between £200 - £500 for the full engine but I'm reluctant to buy an engine on it's own since I can't tell the quality until it's already in the car which could be a really risky in itself.

And of course, the most expensive part, how much would you estimate labour costs to be for the job. Anywhere you ask you will get the bogstandard answer of "well it depends on the engine and the place" so has anyone had a similar job done? How much would you say I'd be looking at?

Any little insights would be appreciated, thanks 🙂

Changing engine for different cc will be insurance nightmare. Better to swap for same engine or buy another car to spec you want. Personally i would pay someone to swap engine there are companies out there that specialize in this and give warranty.

Unless you're fitting the engine yourself, it makes more economical sense to sell the car in its current state and buy an ST150 if that's what you're after.

Like you say the history of any second hand engine is unknown no matter where you get it from. The garage is unlikely to supply an engine so it will be your problem should it go wrong.

At a rough estimate I'd say just over £1000 for the engine and fitting. Being a 1.4TDCi and 120k on the clock your car is worth a grand tops so really not worth the cost of replacing the engine.

I wouldn't be declaring it anyway, not worth the hassle.

Yeah, it'll definately be swinging towards being not worth it but I'm too emotionally invested in her 😞 Saying that, if I can get another year out of the car with a better engine and recoup most, if not all, of the costs when I sell the car with nice tyres, alloys breaks and new clutch etc, I see it as a win.

I'm just saying for the price of a second hand engine, you could also get a second hand engine with a whole car bolted onto it 😂. You can then take all the nice things off your car (such as the alloys, seats etc.) and install them on the new car.

How bad is the oil consumption? If you're only having to top it up a little bit each month I'd honestly just run with it till it either ***** itself or fails the MOT on emissions.

I don't really monitor it that closely. I'd say 1 litre every 1.5k miles maybe?? It's already technically failed an MOT on emissions, it filled the garage with smoke but technically failing and actually failing are 2 different things 😉

There's no argument that the smart thing to do is bin the car and get another one but it's literally easier to fix the car and keep it given my circumstances and as long as the bill doesn't come to WAY more than the cost of the car I'd rather just go through with it. But yes, you are right to be persuading me otherwise.
