Focus MK4 BMS RESET

Featured Replies

HI all does anyone know if the Battery Monitoring System on the MK4 Focus can be reset by the owner as all the tutorials on youtube seem to be for the Mk3 and that sequence does not work on my 2019 MK4.The tutorial by SY Diagnostics is very good and seems to imply that BMS reset is for all Fords but does not work on my car or am I missing something.

There is also a Tutorial for the Mk8 Fiesta which I thought may be OK as it is a current model but that does not work either.

I am reluctant to take it to the Dealership to have it reset as I have not had much joy with them in the past when I have reported other issues and anyway I would prefer to do it myself if it is possible as on the MK3.

You could try using FORScan. Although I haven't used it for that purpose, I'm sure it would be possible as most things are.

Yes, forscan can be used to reset BMS

Try this,

The Battery Monitor Sensor can also be reset manually by using the following
steps:
• Switch on the ignition.
• Press the high beam switch five times by pulling and releasing.
• Press and release the brake pedal three times.
• If the steps were successful, the warning indicator of the battery charging system in the
IPC (instrument panel cluster) flashes three times within the next 15 s.
If the sequence is interrupted by pressing other keys or pedals for any reason, repeat the
above steps, starting from the beginning.

If the BMS reset procedure described above does not work, follow the procedure
below (within 10 s):

• Switch on the ignition.
• Press the rear fog light switch five times.
• Press the hazard flasher switch three times.
• If the steps were successful, the warning indicator of the battery charging system in the
IPC (instrument panel cluster) flashes three times within the next 15 s.

Hope above helps.

Funnily enough, I tried both methods given by Deadwing a couple of weeks ago, the first method described as being for the Fiesta, the second for the Focus. I wasn't having any problem as such, but nearly every time I got in the car I had the timing out bar telling me to start up or it would start shutting things down. Every time this happened, the nav screen went to the Home screen rather than how I left it. Anyway, neither method seemed to do anything, I didn't notice the battery light flash, BUT, I have not seen the timing out bar since! I just went out and tried again, and this time method 1 worked, and after a few seconds the battery light flashed 3 times. Whether this has in fact reset the BMS, who knows? But will keep an eye on things and report back if anything interesting.

So the exact method I used :

Gear in neutral, leave clutch pedal alone, press Start button.

Put light switch to Headlights, flash main beam 5 times.

Press brake pedal and release 3 times.

Wait a few seconds until battery indication flashes on and off 3 times.

Switch off ignition.

Hi

Thanks for your reply I will try your method which is for the Fiesta Mk8 again and see what happens I will post back on here with my result

Thanks to Deadwing and Waggy I have tried again with the method (1) described by Waggy which I understand is for the MK8 Fiesta and this time it has worked I think it may be that I was not waiting long enough for the Battery Light to flash as it took what seemed like a long time but was probably only about 14 seconds (to impatient first time round).

I suppose it makes sense that the sequence would be the same for the MK8 Fiesta & MK4 Focus as they probably share the same wiring and monitoring systems as they came to market relatively close together.

Thank again

Worked for me, TYVM!

I had tried the first method before with no success but tried using Deadwing's waiting 15 seconds and it worked thanks Deadwing used on my Focus Active X diesel.

Thank's man.  The headlights and pedal method worked.

You may also want to increase the battery charge level to 90% using Forscan, if your Start Stop isn't working, which it won't, because it's a MK4!! 😉

What are the reasons for resetting the BMS out of interest?

Well…….my daughter’s mk4 focus air con stopped and the warning beeps changed after work was done on it at a local garage.  The battery had been disconnected and after I did the reset all is back as it should be.
