Erratic Speedo

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Im new to the forum and wondered if you guys could help me please. My son has just purchased a 2011 Fiesta Studio 1.25 for his first car . Really pleased with the car apart from the speedo. It’s very erratic and fluctuates a lot . Sometimes it will stick at 30 mph for a while then move, you can sit at 70 and it will indicate 45!  . I’ve done a bit of research and this is what I’ve done so far........

so erratic Speedo and odometer doesn’t work but NO Eml and all dash lights work perfectly

I did the gauge test and all gauges work perfectly. No fault codes stored through the internal diagnostic but I haven’t yet plugged it in.

I jacked the car up and looked underneath for the VSS , couldn’t find it , spoke with Ford and it doesn’t have one!! I assume it takes a reading from the ABS speed ring ???

Anyone else experienced these issues? We bought the car with a few issues as a father/ son project . We’ve done everything else and this is the last job to complete . We can’t let it beat us !!!! Any help would be truly appreciated. Kind regards Andy

Sounds like the abs sensors or sensor rings on the hubs are dirty or damaged.

Thank you. I’ll take a look. Would it be all 4 wheels or does it take a feed from a particular wheel?

I doubt it on a car with electronic speed sensors lol.

They list speedo cable for that model too speed sensors could be for ABS.

I would like to know what this speedo cable is for then. The ib5 box has the option for a speed sensor, however is only used on cars without ABS as they are the speed sensors.

Nothing there about the speedo cable?

There is but states older cars use them not this model funny how you can still buy them though when looking for spare parts for 2011 fiesta studio 1.25

Older cars i'm use to working on taken from gearbox.

You got a link?

You must work on some antiques. Speedo cables haven't been used for donkeys years.

I’m going to get it plugged in to see if any fault codes are stored. I’ll report back once it’s sorted . Thanks guys

My mistake , the Odometer does work it’s just the speedo that’s erratic . Will get it plugged it at some point next week

you haven't been trying to clock it?😁

🤣🤣 not worth it ! 🤣🤣

If you've got a basic OBD2 reader you should be able to read digital speed through it.

The fact the ABS light isn't on suggests that the speed sensors are all picking up the correct speed.  The PCM also uses speed input for the fuel maps, so you'll often get a loss of power when the speedo fails as it runs in safe mode.

I think it's an issue with the clocks myself.  Not a common fault though so will be interesting to hear the solution when you find it!

Interim update :

This car had been stood for  a while before we bought it and the battery was dead so don’t know if we had some bogus fault codes.

fault code :

FCDIM

B10BD multifunction switch, open circuit, intermittent

UO193 no comm with digital audio module A

DA00 unknown fault code

.......

BCMii

UO121 lost comm with ABS control module

UO415 invalid data from ABS CONTROL module

ABS

UO401 invalid data from engine control/ power train control module

C003A rear right wheel speed sensor plus fault code for the three other wheel speed sensors.

C0051 steering wheel position sensor

U3003 Battery voltage

we have cleared all of those fault codes . Car has new battery now so don’t know how many of the codes are due to old battery. No warning lights , car drives spot on , brakes a little sharp ! Odometer works just Speedo has mind of its own. Since clearing the faults the speedo seems accurate up to 40 mph then it’s hesitant. Will drive the car over the weekend and plug her in again on Monday and report back

Quick update.

Plugged in again today and all fault codes that were cleared , remained cleared. Tested the ABS  and that was fine . Took it out on the road and viewed the live data from the speed sensors which were all reliable. All pointing towards instrument cluster. Ordered secondhand unit and will report back once fixed.

Fitted new instrument cluster today and found out that it needs to go to the dealers to be programmed as you can’t start the car ! Decided to put old cluster back in for now so we could use it . A friend suggested squirting wd40 on the electrical connector so I thought I would give it a try . The old cluster now works fine 🙈🙈🙈🙈
