Mk6.5 Noise on Front O/S, and where to place jackstands.

Featured Replies

Hi All,

TLDR: what's this noise, and where do I place my jackstand(s)?

Left my car parked outside my house for a week, came back and now makes this noise from the front o/s:

Gut feeling tells me it's a snapped spring as the front n/s snapped while waiting for an ABS Sensor in February. Any better ideas as to what it might be? Have also been suggested it could be the "plastic cup".

Am going to jack it up and inspect. I know how to use the scissor jack in the right place, but how do I work out where to place a jackstand? Am guessing I need to find a hard rail of some sort.

PS I am aware that a scissor jack has zero hope of catching the car if it falls off the jackstands. I'm willing to lose my arm to be honest, and I'm hoping I won't stick my head underneath unless I'm extremely stupid today.

My old Fiesta made that noise, it was a broken coil spring. The other side went around two weeks later so perhaps think about getting both done if that is the problem?

Yep, that's what I'm guessing - the other side went in February so hopefully I don't need another one already.

It looks very low on that corner too, my guess is a spring

To get back to you - turns out my RAC policy will cover me for a tow so they sent a patrol out, who agreed that it's the spring. Should be getting towed around mid-day.

Been quoted £113 all-in by ATS Euromaster, plus whatever for an alignment. Don't know a reputable non-chain as I'm new to the area, and ATS did me right with my tyres.

Ta for everyone's help.

PS: Have always wanted to lower it, but not like this!
