MK4 St-Line X rear outer light removal

Featured Replies

how in the hell to you get the rear light off of the focus mk4 i got the plastic wing nuts off with no problems but just cant get the light to come out there is a pin in front of the light i just cant get the light and the pin to come out anyone get any tips on how to remove it

I've not had the need to remove a MK4 rear lamp but instructions show using a couple of plastic trim tools to help the lamp out either side of where the locating pin is.

cos i have the adaptive led headlights i just wanted to change the rear stoplight and the indicator bulbs the led ones. but why there is standard bulbs in a rear light that's led???

It is weird aye.  Some bits like the reverse are led and others aren't.  To my simple mind it would surely be easier to have either all led or all halogen?

The outer part is dead easy to take off. I used this video to find out how. If I've linked it right it'll start at the right time, if not go from 3:25

It takes about 5 minutes tops to take em out.

I've got adaptive LEDs too, my rear lights have the LED bar that goes across but the indicators and stop and tail are normal filament bulbs! The bulb holders are really tight as well, very frustrating to get back in, easy to undo though 🙄

looking at my rear lights my tail lights are in led as they come on then i unlock the car and the bulb spec in the manual shows stop light and indicators ar bulbs god knows why and all the rest are led's and maybe cos you have the estate version you have bulbs as tail lights and i will have another go this weekend if it's not raining to remove them

I've just double checked the bulbs in my tail lights.....The stop light and indicator are filament bulbs, the tail light as you quite rightly say is the LED strip. The LED strip is fed from a pair of wires that are connected via the stop light holder and as such the cabling for the light cannot be removed from the light unit it can only be unplugged from the car.

Does that mean that you can't change LED bulbs because they won't come out of the housing?  In that case are they meant to last the life of the car or are we to expect big bills when lights start to fail?

Yes that's right, not user replaceable at all. The LED unit is a rectangular PCB that is glued in place and illuminates a plastic light bar that creates the fancy shape. I know this for a fact due to a supermarket car park incident requiring a new lamp meaning I could see the internals, the cost for a single side for a wagon is £204 😥 In the picture the black and white wire at the top right is for the LED unit and doesn't come out, the rubber bung does come out, the wiring doesn't because it is glued internally.IMG_20201102_151952.thumb.jpg.b54aad28663ef8e170564d0e2a91b48e.jpg

can i ask how the ***** did you get the light off the car 😡 i cant for the life of me get the ***** off the pin thats in the back

There are two long plastic retaining wing nuts that secure the assembly to the body. A cable loom that’s accessible from inside the boot that unplugs from a clipped connector that passes through the body with a waterproof gtomit that you need to remove once the light is loose and, the bit you’re probably struggling with - a locating pillar on the most forward corner of the lamp assembly. This does just clip in and simply needs a good pull to release it from the receptacle it fits in. The first time I did it I was the same. Make sure you pull it directly away from the body of the vehicle and it pops out.

That video I posted above, look at 3:37, you can see the little plastic bolt thingies, these screw off, once they're off you just need to manipulate the plastic shield (at 3:44), the light then can pull out from the back.

  • 1 year later...

I just removed mine by following the video to the point where the two screw posts and black plastic shield is removed. Then, I fed some light gauge brush cutter plastic wire (Could use heavy fishing wire) fed from bottom to top, behind the light assembly three quarters of the way down the light towards the front of the car, near the pin. I tied a knot and used the handles of my pliers to pull the wire outwards. It took a reasonable amount of force but eventually popped out.
