Burning rubber smell?

Featured Replies

Hey can anyone give me some advice on a smell that I’ve noticed recently coming from the car when held up in traffic and moving slowly, smells like burning rubber? When I parked the car eariler and got out I could smell the burning rubber smell aswell. Any help would be appreciated

you not doing burnouts are you?😁

On a serious note have you opened bonnet and done a visual inspection/sniff test around car - no good if you have covid!

Are you sure it is rubber and not a slipping Clutch or binding Brake. They both have similar smell to each other and it is quite strong and could be mistaken for rubber if you have never smelt them before.

Yes, but the OP said that it happened in traffic and moving slowly.

If clutch was slipping going slow it would be worst accelerating. As per brake binding sounds more reasonable but again would expect car to pull and also noticeable noise of grinding/squealing.

When held up in traffic and moving slowly do you hold the car on the clutch or go into neutral?

i always thought the clutch burning smell, was more like burning fish oil than rubber

On the clutch it’s a habit which I’m trying to break!

I’ve not opened the bonnet, I’m not really sure what I’d be looking for lol. Defiantly have not got covid lol! Tested twice a week at my hospital lol

It defiantly smells like burning rubber to me,  I’m not sure what a slipping clutch or binding brake is so I couldn’t comment on that!

Is the car a diesel? Sounds like a DPF regeneration in progress.

Thank you, looks like yet another trip to the garage 😞 I shall let you no as soon as I do!

Agree'd.  No mention of engine type yet?  DPF regen smells awful sometimes.  If the fans going as well you can be fairly sure it's doing a regen.

I had rubber burning smell for only 2 or 3 times at the starting up or stop, and then the smelling stopped and did not come back again. Do not know what happened to the car.
