Mondeo Mk3 estate banging/tapping over 35mph at the rear.

Featured Replies

I have owned a 2002 Mondeo mk3 estate for 6 years but recently the rear silencer fell off. I took it to an exhaust centre and they could not cut the old pipe easily by the bend and only managed it by removing the anti-roll bar. I noticed later on a motorway a metallic sort of banging/tapping at the rear at speeds above 35-40 mph. Sounded like there was someone with a hammer tapping the underside. Thought the exhaust may be insecure but not so. Car passed a new MOT last week still doing it. Hoped the MOT would give me a clue but no mention whatsoever! Its driving me mad and thinking over moving the loyal friend on. Any clues as want to keep it as has been such a good car.

Heat shield is loose is my guess.

Could be- will have a closer look. Seems quite a hefty clanging/banging and not evident at all driving around town. Its a bit like something is rotating and catching but checked discs and pads    Its a regular clanging. Thank you for your reply.

Just reread your post as they removed the anti roll bar that's another place to check, make sure it's bolted back in place and it's bushes are good.

Yes I wondered about that. Not picked-up on MOT though strangely.
