Automatic transmission fluid check/top up (must be warm, at specified temperature)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am trying to check gearbox oil level (2010 Fusion, semi-automatic, durashift EST), but the ford service schedule shows 'must be warm, at specified temperature' with no details. The Haynes workshop manual does not mention this when checking the oil level. So I am quite confused, please could anyone can give some ideas. Many thanks.

The gearbox is a manual transmission not auto, same as fitted to manual models.

To check/top-up the oil you have to remove the shift actuator to access the fill plug.

Many thanks, Dan, now I know why I couldn't find the fill plug following Haynes. It's a pain to remove shift actuator. Previously I got gear stuck problem (i.e. bush stuck inside shift actuator) but couldn't remove it, finally towed to local garage to remove it, then I fixed it myself, garage helped me refit it.

Do I have to check&top-up gear box oil, please? Ford claimed it was sealed for Life. My car is 10 years old. What temperature should be when checking? Thanks.

Its personal choice, I sucked the oil out of mine and refilled it a few years ago. The actuator is not a big job, but there's always the chance of something breaking (wiring) so I don't think I'll be taking mine off again unnecessarily.

Fill and check cold, level should 5 to 10mm below plug, use an Allen key in plug hole to check level.

Thanks a lot, Dan, ordered 500cc oil suction gun arrived today, will order 2.3l gear box oil and try to suck out all and refil.
