Original - Fiesta based - Ford Puma - power steering

Featured Replies

Apologies for posting here, but given my Puma is based on the Fiesta I figured this be the best place to ask the question 🙂 . My Puma Black Edition (1.7litre, 92,000 miles) is in perfect condition apart from very, very heavy steering. It's got power steering but doesn't seem to be working. Checked the fluid level in reservoir, and all good. Is there a simple fix?

Has the problem suddenly started or have you only just got the car?  The hydraulic steering will feel heavier than modern electric steering if you're used to something else.

If there's definitely a fault, first thing to check is tyre pressures, low pressure on even one side will make the steering heavier.  Second thing to check is does it lighten up at speed or is it still stiff?  If still stiff, there's likely be a stiff top mount bearing or ball joint.  Assuming it does lighten as you drive faster, the pump is probably worn out and needs replacement.  Fairly simple fix.

It's the latter, so looks like a new power steering pump is needed. Thanks for this 🙂
