08 Fiesta MK6 water pump replacement

Featured Replies

Hi members,

I have a query regarding the replacement of the water pump on my 2008 WQ MK6 Fiesta 1.6l. It appears to be leaking and it's time to replace it. Could anyone provide some guidance on how to replace it or point me in the right direction if anyone has information about this job?

I can confirm the water pump on mine only runs off the aux belt and not the timing belt. So I assume that all that needs to be done would be to loosen the aux belt via puller tensioner and remove the alternator and possibly the timing cover and radiator overflow bottle to access the water pump bolts.

If anyone could let me know the best starting point that would be great. I am pretty cluey with a set of spanners and I would like to do this repair. Could anyone also let me know where the tensioner pulley is for the aux belt that runs the water pump?

Thanks heaps in advance.

MK

Just an update I have completed the water pump replacement. It was a complex task but it's very doable. A lot of obstacles to get past to get to the water pump but after that it's all progress. If anyone wants any tips just ask and I'll help where I can.

Excellent work! Well done! Did you only loose timing belt or remove it? I guess the timing belt tensioner must be removed. Did you do timing alignment? Thanks.

Thanks mate. I only removed the upper timing cover and loosened it the belt off the cam sprockets as the timing belt tensioner was a part of the water pump and it had to be loosened for the water pump to be replaced. All I did was mark the two cam sprockets with a white marker as well as the crank pulley (incase they moved during re-tension).

I am going to be renewing my timing belt of a 2008 ford fiesta mk6 1.25 16v and will most likely want to do the water pump too. Just out of interest did you find any information, videos on the subject and how long did it take you to complete the job? Thanks, and well done for putting the effort in to do the work yourself many people cringe at the idea but I see it all as a learning curve.👍

Thanks mate - you're right it's an absolutely great learning curve. Great for experience to know if you need to do another similar repair job down the track! I am so happy I had chosen to give it a go.

I think it's definitely a great idea to replace the water pump while you're at it if you've never replaced it (and if you have high mileage/wear and tear) as it's literally right there when the timing cover is off and the timing belt loose/off. It took me two days but that was taking my time without beating the time as I wasn't in a complete rush and it was my first time doing a repair on my mk6 Fiesta.

There wasn't a lot of videos / resources on this specific model doing a water pump replacement on Youtube, what was helpful was finding a video on youtube about how to replace the Aux belt as I discovered there was no tensioner pulley for that! How funny! So I had to pull cut mine off and replace a new one but managed to re-use the power steering one as it is in good nic. The 2 piece timing cover makes the job a lot easier. There is also an engine mount in the way of the upper timing cover that makes it almost impossible to to remove the cover. Watch out for that as you will need to remove that engine mount in the way, while supporting the engine from the bottom with a jack. I completely removed the mount from both the engine unbolted it from the chassis as you get a lot of room to work with once it's out and the timing cover comes out/goes back into position with ease.  Just more peace of mind.

Good luck with it mate and if you get stuck let me know. Cheers.
