New member needing help with wheel load ratings?

Featured Replies

Hi all. New member here. I currently own 3 ford's, I have a 2011 mondeo titanium x sport estate, a 2009 smax titanium and a 2007 Ford focus St. Having a bit of a hard time finding some details out on wheel weight and load ratings. I want to put some bigger wheels onto the smax but I keep reading posts about making sure the wheels are load rated for the weight of the smax but none of them actually state how to know this or what markings are meant to be displayed? I know 8j is width, et is offset, pcd is stud pattern etc but what markings determine the load rating? I have 2 sets of wheels in my shed I can use but need to be sure. 1 set is my standard set of focus St wheels and I also have an aftermarket set. Any help or info on this would be greatly appreciated

Most car tires are 91 or 95 rated. Some of the 95s are listed as XL meaning eXtra Load.... I think!

91 is the one to go for as the standard load and if you value quietness and comfort. The 95 has a harder sidewall and will transmit more noise into the cabin. But if you regularly carry lots of stuff 95 might be the way to go.

blackcircles website should tell you the right tires for your car if you put in the reg.

Hi there. Thanks for your reply, I am after details on the actually wheels themselves and not the tyres, apparently the wheels are made to handle different weights for different cars but I do not know how to find this information out for example would it be safe putting focus or mondeo wheels onto the smax etc

The load rating of the wheels can usually not be found on the wheels itself.

For aftermarket wheels the load rating can either be found in the approval documents or requested from the manufacturer of the wheels.

Original Ford wheels are part of the European type approval for the particular vehicle that the wheels were designed for. Ford does not list or supply technical information like for example the load rating of the wheels.

To be honest, I wouldn’t put wheels that were intended for a car on the s-max. The load rating on my tyres are 102, with a dry weight of nearly 2 ton, then add the fully laden weight to mix. You will easy be over 2.5 ton, I would say the wheel specs would be on par with big 4x4’s going by the tyre load rating.
