Intermittent starting issue?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2015 MK3.5 1.5tdci focus , a few month ago I got in it and went to start it and nothing happened. After turning the ignition off then back on a few times it finally started and since has been fine until today. Queuing in traffic at traffic lights my stop start activated, traffic started moving so pressed in clutch and nothing happened and a message displayed "manual restart required" and stop/start icon turned yellow. Tried to manually restart it over and over and nothing still so I got AA out who checked battery which was fine (its new so guessed it would be). Tried to start again with bonnet up and only a click could be heard, AA guy said it was starter motor based on the click noise and bumped started me, he didn't do any other checks. Got home without issue and have since tried starting it a few times and it works every time. Has anyone experienced similar and could it actually be early stages of the starter or solenoid starting to fail ? It has almost 77k miles on it mostly motorway miles , not sure of life span on these stop/start starters.

*Update*

So I did some tests with a multi meter yesterday from battery down to starter and found this connection in the picture was the cause of the problem. It was dirty and a little corroded so I used contact cleaner and a wire brush to clean it up and gave the terminals on the solenoid a good clean an now it's working again. Saved myself £313 for a new one from ford.

Nice one on the cheap fix AND for posting back with a resolution that might help someone else in the future 👍

Can I ask where this connection is?
